Supply chain and logistics tech has seen a spike in investment in 2016. In 2015, $2.5B was invested across 293 deals, and at the current run-rate $5B, double last year’s total, is projected to be invested across 315 deals in 2016.
We used CB Insights data to rank venture capital, corporate venture, and super angel investors by their unique supply chain and logistics tech investments since 2012.
We define the supply chain and logistics tech category broadly to include companies that use software to improve efficiency across the supply chain and logistics ecosystems. However, we exclude on-demand companies restricted to specific verticals (e.g., we do not include those companies focused exclusively on restaurant or grocery delivery, or consumer moving companies).
Most active investors
SV Angel topped the list with 7 unique investments since 2012. FundersClub, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and New Enterprise Associates all tied for second with 6 investments apiece.
While SV Angel has not yet made any investments to the supply chain and logistics tech space in 2016, the firm participated in 2 investments in 2015, investing seed money in warehousing rental company Flexe and packaging and shipping company ShipBob. The firm also participated in a $6.6M seed round to freight-forwarding company Flexport in 2014.
FundersClub also invested in Flexport, participating in the company’s $20M Series A in 2015. FundersClub participated in ShipBob’s seed and Series A funding rounds, as well, in addition to shipping integration company EasyPost‘s two tranches of seed financing (also in SV Angel’s portfolio).
Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and New Enterprise Associates (smart money investors who have bet on the supply chain and logistics tech space) did not share any of the above investments. Most recently, KPCB participated in package shipping startup Shyp‘s $50M Series B funding in 2015. New Enterprise Associates most recently invested in trucking logistics platform Transfix, as part of the company’s $22M Series B, in July of this year.
Other investors that made the top investors list include 500 Startups, Andreessen Horowitz, Qualcomm Ventures, and UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund.
Flexport, EasyPost, Zipline International, ShipBob, HubLogix, KeepTruckin, Shippo, Curbside and Boxc all received investment from more than one of the most active investors.
