Earlier this week, one of our mobile app alerts was triggered by an app called OpenDoor which was making big rankings moves. OpenDoor is a free app offering a randomized IP address for anonymous browsing and avoiding Internet censors. On July 6, the app had catapulted to No. 1 in the ‘Utilities’ category and, incredibly, a top 10 overall app in the App Store after previously not ranking in the top 1000 overall apps at all in 2014.
The OpenDoor app, published by Not Be Limited, should not be confused with OpenDoor, the new home-buying startup founded by Keith Rabois, which announced its first $9.95M in a big party round led by Rabois’ firm, Khosla Ventures on July 7. But the jump happened right as the press hulabaloo around Rabois’ company happened. Of course, we also picked up on a lot of chatter about the app in places like Reddit so it’s possible that the jump was purely coincidental.
Below is the App Store rank chart for OpenDoor App over the last month (taken directly from the company’s CB Insights profile Performance Metrics tab). If the boost was driven by a case of mistaken app identity, it wouldn’t be the first time. A more clear cut example occurred when Plated appeared on Shark Tank and another Plated app got an app store boost.
