Plated is a New York-based food tech startup that puts together and delivers ingredients and instructions in custom meal boxes to prepare at home. The company is coming off a $5M Series A in January from investors including ff Venture Capital, Lerer Ventures and Founder Collective.
Plated’s business model and promise was enough to get Mark Cuban to offer $500k for slightly more than 5% on last Friday’s (April 4) episode of Shark Tank (filmed before the startup took VC money).
So we wondered whether the company’s appearance on Shark Tank would result in an uptick in its App Store rank – as in the case of Cycloramic. But unfortunately, Plated does not have an app in the App Store. Interestingly, there is an app named Plated in the App Store published by Pupsidedown that allows photo sharing for chefs, cooks, amateurs and food lovers. It’s unrelated but given the new-found awareness of Plated, did the app still see a bump?
And as our app data below shows, that Plated app did see a significant jump in the App Store ranks due the Shark Tank Effect, despite not being the same company. The app jumped from 692 in the ‘Food & Drink’ category rankings before airing to a rank of 131 the day after and held at 164 as of April 7th.
So whether it’s your app or an app with the same name, the Shark Tank Effect is real.
