Real Estate tech investment hit new record-high levels in 2015, with $1.7B raised across 191 deals.
Real estate tech startups are addressing pain points for brokers, agents, buyers, borrowers, lenders, and more. VCs are getting active in the real estate tech space with investments spanning mortgage tech and analytics, to online brokerages and property marketing tools, among other categories.
Which firms are most active? We used CB Insights data to rank VCs by their unique real estate tech investments over the past 5 years.
500 Startups top the list as the most active investor in real estate tech startups. They are also the most active early-stage VC overall in 2015. Thrive Capital was the second most active investor in real estate tech with some notable investments ranging from tech-enabled brokerages to mortgage tech software. Here are other takeaways from our infographic:
- 500 Startups made several early-stage investments in 2015 including bets on mortgage platform Lenda and real estate agent matching service HomeLight. 500 Startups investments’ span startups from analytics companies like Compstak to listing services like 42Floors (where Thrive is also invested), among many others.
- Thrive Capital was the second-most active investor on our list. The firm was founded by entrepreneur Josh Kushner, who is also co-founder of new real estate investment platform Cadre and whose family is prominent in real estate development. Thrive is invested in a range of companies from leasing management software startup Hightower to tech-enabled brokerages like Compass, as well as Keith Rabois’ fast home-selling and buying startup Opendoor Labs that raised a $80M Series C in October 2015.
- Malaysia-based Frontier Digital Ventures was the third-most active investor in real estate tech since 2011. They count Latin America-focused listing service VivaReal and Africa-focused listing service PropertyMaputo as some of their portfolio companies.
- Other firms on the table are SV Angel, BoxGroup, DCM Ventures (both BoxGroup and DCM are investors in Matterport, which does 3D models of physical spaces), and Accel Partners.
