Startups in the medical device industry are on pace for an uptick in financing, thanks to interest from private market investors, including corporates. We put together a periodic table of medical device companies to highlight promising startups, industry categories, exits, and active investors in the category.
The table is meant to serve as a guide to navigate the key players in the space. The 140 companies and 10 investors in the table were chosen using CB Insights data on total funding received by each company, number of investors’ unique investments in the category, and exits data.

Navigating the Periodic Table of Medical Devices:
The table’s top section lists notable medical device startups, while the bottom two rows shows top investors and notable exits. We broke down our list of medical device startups into several subcategories. Companies engaged in applications across multiple categories (oncology as well as diagnostics, for example) were placed into the category of best fit.
- General surgery: This category includes companies such as Medrobotics and Gecko Biomedical developing robotics systems, surgical sealants, and other solutions for general surgical applications.
- Cardiovascular: Companies like CVRx and Mitralign are developing solutions to cardiovascular issues such as hypertension and mitral valve regurgitation.
- Ophthalmology: Companies including Pixium and Ivantis that create solutions to restore vision or treat glaucoma.
- Oncology: Companies in this category, like RefleXion Medical and Novian Health, are advancing diagnoses and treatments for cancer, including specific types of cancer, oncological imaging, and ablation techniques.
- Orthopedics: Companies such as Moximed and Benvenue Medical are developing implants to help treat osteoarthritis and vertebral compression fractures.
- Neurology: Companies including NeuroPace and Brainscope are working on treatments for neurological conditions, including epilepsy. They also aid in the assessment of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
- Diagnostics: Companies like Atlas Genetics and Biodesix that focus on point-of-care diagnostics specialties, including molecular diagnostics and genomic profiling for lung cancer.
- Imaging: Companies including Signostics and HyperMed Imaging that are making conventional medical imaging portable. Some are also developing entirely new diagnostic imaging processes.
- Patient monitoring: Companies such as OptiScan Biomedical and EarlySense are creating bedside monitoring devices intended to improve metabolic and hemodynamic control while reducing healthcare costs.
