Digital Health has seen more than $3B in investment and a number of multi-billion dollar exits including Veeva Systems and Castlight Health making health IT/digital health one of the hottest areas for investment and acquisition activity. After the positive feedback we got for our Periodic Tables of IoT and Fintech, we analyzed CB Insights’ data to identify the key investors, acquirers and companies engaged in digital health to put together our first-ever Periodic Table of Digital Health.
The Periodic Table of Digital Health highlights the 123 key private companies, investors, accelerators, acquirers and more in the health IT / digital health ecosystem. As always, we used a mix of data around financial health, company momentum, investor quality and M&A/IPO activity.

Navigating the Periodic Table of Digital Health
The table focuses on seven different types of organizations (from left to right).
- The left side of the Periodic Table of Digital Health includes companies across several key Digital Health verticals. Additional details on these sub-areas of are below.
- On the far right, the table shifts to venture capital firms (both multi-stage and micro VCs), corporate investors, angels, and accelerators/incubators selected based primarily on total portfolio investments into the space and recency of investment since 2009 as well as exit performance. Many of the firms and accelerators on the table are health specific.
- The bottom section below is of notable Digital Health exits.
As disruptive startups look to tackle different segments of the healthcare industry, we analyzed Digital Health companies within five sub-verticals as detailed below:
- Healthcare cost transparency – Companies providing price transparency solutions with the goal of facilitating healthcare insurance plans and prescription complexities for consumers and businesses
- Office/Patient management – Companies that utilize software to better improve the organization of Electronic Health Records (EHR), billing and expense protocols, patient-doctor communication, and patient monitoring outside of the hospital.
- Big data healthcare analytics – Companies offering verticalized predictive and prescriptive data and analytics solutions for the healthcare sector.
- Quantified self – Companies using sensor and data technologies to track health and wellness areas including calories burned, steps taken or sleep rate and transmitting the information to you digitally.
- Real-time healthcare – Companies offering platforms and technologies to get on-demand access to healthcare and/or licensed health practitioners, consultations and education.

Investors were broken up as follows:
Venture Capital Firms
Venture capital firms included make venture equity investments across the stage spectrum and geographies focusing on Digital Health companies. The VC firm category spans both micro VCs and large multi-stage firms with LP commitments ranging from $25M to well over $1B+.
Corporate Investors
Corporate investors into Digital Health are corporations with identifiable corporate venture units such as Qualcomm Ventures or Intel Capital.
Angel Investors
Digital Health angel investors listed are individual angel investors who offer early-stage capital, advice and networks to startups in exchange for equity or convertible debt.
Accelerators/Incubators
Accelerators and startup incubators typically offer some combination of equity investment, mentorship and resources around company development. Those on the Digital Health periodic table have either funded a number of Digital Health portfolio companies or have a specific focus in the space (ie. Blueprint Health)
Notable exits
Key Digital Health companies that have been acquired or went public in the last 5 years that have received funding.
