VC-backed tech companies in China raised some serious cash in 2014 with over twenty $100M+ rounds closing during the year. None were bigger than smartphone-maker Xiaomi’s late-December $1.1B Series E which valued the company at $45B, up from $10B a year earlier. The round made Xiaomi the most valuable private tech company in the world – even ahead of much talked about Uber.
Tencent invested heavily into large Chinese tech companies participating in two of the five biggest deals of the year.
In aggregate the 14 biggest deals of 2014, which included Uber alternative DiDi Dache, Groupon-esque Meituan, as well as Jingdong, raised over $5.1B. 2015 has already seen an $800M Series D financing for another Uber alternative, Kaudi Dache so it looks like 2015 could be another big year for China tech.
