As bolsas asiáticas fecharam na maioria em baixa, nesta sexta-feira. Várias praças pioraram nas horas finais do pregão, em meio a notícias sobre a cautela com a exposição de bancos da Europa ao quadro financeiro e econômico frágil da Turquia. Na China, porém, o dia foi de alta modesta na Bolsa de Xangai, enquanto no Japão foram avaliados dados do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) e o iene forte pressionou as ações locais. A Bolsa de Xangai fechou em alta de 0,03%, em 2.795,31 pontos, e a de Shenzhen, de menor abrangência, subiu 0,69%, a 1.584,92 pontos. Após oscilar ao longo do pregão, Xangai conseguiu avançar modestamente, no fim de uma semana de volatilidade no mercado acionário chinês. Entre algumas ações, Bank of China caiu 0,28% e Air China recuou 0,53%, mas Bright Dairy & Food avançou 0,10%. Em Hong Kong, o índice Hang Seng recuou 0,84%, a 28.366,62 pontos, para interromper uma sequência de quatro altas. A cautela vinda da Europa mais para o fim do pregão pesou. No setor de energia, CNOOC e PetroChina caíram ambas 1,5%. Em Tóquio, o índice Nikkei teve queda de 1,33%, a 22.298,08 pontos. Na agenda de indicadores, o Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) japonês cresceu 0,5% no segundo trimestre ante o primeiro, o que superou a previsão de alta de 0,3% dos analistas. Além disso, a cautela nos mercados globais elevou a demanda por iene, o que valorizou a moeda. Isso tende a pressionar ações de exportadoras japonesas. No setor financeiro, Mizuho Financial Group caiu 1,02%. Na Coreia do Sul, o índice Kospi fechou em baixa de 0,91% na Bolsa de Seul, em 2.282,79 pontos. Samsung teve queda de 3,2%, enquanto a fabricante de microchips Hynix caiu 3,7%. Já papéis do setor de construção se saíram bem, com Hyundai Engineering em alta de 3,2%. Em Taiwan, o índice Taiex caiu 0,40%, a 10.983,68 pontos. Ações de fabricantes de componentes eletrônicos influíram negativamente. Taiwan Semi teve queda de 0,8%. Rugby league players across Australia and New Zealand will be doing a lot of learning in the near future. Velpic Ltd.  announced a partnership with the National Rugby League that will see 4,000 players in the league use the web-based learning management system to get educated in topics dealing with wellness, relationships and social responsibility. Players will be able to access the lessons on their mobile devices, and program administrators can track in real-time how many players have completed the various modules and overall player engagement in the system, as well as provide feedback. “The NRL and State Leagues continue to look at the best opportunities to educate players and officials about Wellbeing. Everyone has access to a mobile phone, so what better way to deliver Wellbeing and Education messages to the hip pocket than Velpic, as it works on all mobile devices,” NRL representative Paul Heptonstall said in the announcement.

Rugby League players will get online lessons in good manners from online trainer Velpic under a new deal with the National Rugby League. After a trial with the Canterbury Bulldogs earlier this year, Velpic’s eCoaching and eLearning platform will roll out to 4000 players in the national league and elite pathways program. Velpic say it will help teach the burly football players lessons in wellbeing, respectful relationships and social responsibilities — a tough task considering the league is known for its off-field controversies just as much as its on-field triumphs. Velpic Sport — launched in August — offers an app that allows trainers and coaches to manage off-field training online and track and manage player performance. Cloud-based learning is set to change the landscape of elite coaching. The sports coaching platform market is expected to surpass $1 billion in the next five years. “The NRL and State Leagues continue to look at the best opportunities to educate players and officials about well-being,” NRL welfare and education manager Paul Heptonstall said in a statement. “Everyone has access to a mobile phone, so what better way to deliver well-being and education messages to the hip pocket than Velpic, as it works on all mobile devices.”
Velpic raised $969,247 at 0.8c in November, to help fund an investment in an Israeli security software company. It reported $567,000 in sales last quarter and had $2.3 million in the bank at the end of September. Velpic expected to spend $1.3 million this quarter. Winning the Talent Unleashed Award for Most Disruptive CIO/CTO was validation of 25 years’ work for Russell Francis
Sitting through an induction day may not be the most exciting part of starting a new job or getting up to date training in a role, but it’s a necessary part of the process. Forget sitting in a dull room with a stack of paperwork, though – like many other things in today’s world, this process is moving online, and Perth-founded startup Velpic is helping make this as easy as possible. Born out of development agency Dash Digital, Velpic was founded by Russell Francis in response to demand from the local market. At the height of the mining boom six or seven years ago, Western Australian mining companies were hiring thousands of new employees each week; with in-person inductions no longer feasible, Dash Digital was approached to build a solution. “We decided rather than being a company that charged people for creating content, we would build the platform to allow clients to maintain their content themselves, and that’s where we sort of flipped it, that was the lightbulb moment,” Francis said. After several years spent building up the platform, Velpic – Video E-Learning Platform in the Cloud – was launched in July 2014. Next came expansion. “If you stay in WA, you are pretty much going to be selling to mining companies, so as we jumped out of WA we started to find all sorts of different industries. Now we have schools training their staff in occupational health and safety issues in the school environment, government departments training 25,000 people on government policies and things like that, and very sales-oriented companies,” Francis said. “Any company with a diversified workforce, that’s where our tool really comes into its own because at any time you can just open up your mobile phone, and start doing a couple of lessons on your phone. We’ve been used in over 600 cities around the world, so it’s a very diverse application that can be used in any number of situations.”
As the company developed, Francis said a member of the Talent Unleashed Awards team approached him to encourage Velpic to enter the awards. For a few years Francis declined, believing the company wasn’t yet big enough, but in 2015 he was able to be convinced. “Of course, it was a really attractive proposition, having judges like Richard Branson and Steve Wozniak look at our business,” Francis said. “Validation is very important, and the ultimate validation for us is that people are prepared to put a hand in their pocket and buy our software, but external validation like winning an award like Talent Unleashed would be very good for our business, and and also good for our understanding that we’re on the right track as an early-stage startup.”
The startup was, at that time, gearing up for a reverse takeover as it bid to list on the ASX, which meant Francis had both an array of collateral to tap into as he put together his Awards entry, and was getting lots of practice at pitching Velpic. “I was already talking to a lot of people about the business, but we actually had an unfair advantage in that we had the Velpic platform. I actually created my application in the Velpic platform as a video lesson and submitted that rather than a boring old Word document. We had a sexy application created through our own technology, so we were eating our own dog food and I think that helped us through that process,” Francis said. Francis walked away with the Award for Most Disruptive CIO/CTO, which gave him both a sense of personal validation, and helped push the company forward. “I never anticipated we’d get the response we did…the validation was very important as we were two to three months out from our public listing so it helped with the market assessing us as a potential company; at the time tech backdoor listings were very hot, so to have something that helped you stand out from the crowd was very important, and this certainly did,” he explained. “[The award was also] validation of 25 years worth of work. We’re not football stars winning trophies all the time, so to have some external validation of your capabilities and the ideas you have and those ideas coming to fruition as a real product that you’ve spent a lot of blood, sweat, and tears on for years was nice.”
Since its win at the Talent Unleashed Awards, Velpic has listed on the ASX and raised $10 million to pursue growth – and grow it has. From the early days where 200 lessons were being completed through the platform each month, Velpic is now seeing 10,000 lessons a month from over 100 clients, among them the likes of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and News Corp Australia. “I’d say we’re well beyond an MVP now; we’re a well-positioned learning management system and we’re actually disrupting $22 billion global LMS industry by introducing things like VR,” Francis said. With entries for the 2017 Talent Unleashed Awards closing on August 31, Francis is urging startups to “absolutely get into it” and work hard on their entries. “You can’t procrastinate; get in there early and do something a little bit innovative. Guys like Richard Branson and Steve Wozniak see hundreds and hundreds of business pitches all the time, so they need something a little bit novel,” Francis advised. “I think they want something that’s quite sincere as well. I don’t think they’re into people that aren’t passionate about their businesses, so you’ve got to bring the passion and bring the sincerity and show them something they haven’t seen before.”

Velpic, Mills Oakley collaborate on new training platform for schools

Online training and e-learning platform provider Velpic has partnered with national law firm, Mills Oakley, to launch a new training and management system designed specifically for schools. Under the partnership, Mills Oakley and Velvic have develop a cohesive training and management system to identify hazards and risks associated with tasks carried out by employees at primary and secondary schools across Australia. Velpic Chief Executive, Russell Francis says the new offering will provide expert content, created by Mills Oakley, on safety management within schools in order to minimise exposure of employees to potential hazards and schools from potential litigation. The content will be delivered via Velpic’s learning management system (LMS). The initiative for schools was developed in response to the High Court decision of Deal v Kodakkathanath in which the High Court determined that schools must do all that is reasonably practicable to ensure that teachers perform each and every task in the safest way possible. Francis said that, subsequently, it has become imperative that schools demonstrate active involvement in identifying, addressing and training employees against workplace risks. The platform will be available to schools at a rate of $250 per month, to be billed annually, and the package will allow for up to 250 monthly active users. Additional content updates will also be provided on legislative developments to ensure that schools are ahead of the curve and consistently adhering to best practices. Schools will also have the ability to upgrade to a standard higher plan, with no additional cost for the Mills Oakley content. The higher plan will allow customers to create their own training modules, specific to their school that may relate to other topics outside of health and safety. Francis said the targeted content provides the initial stepping stone for Velpic to tap into a new market and additional revenue opportunities. “The launch of this new offering enables us to tap into the Australian educational sector. We have partnered with the best legal experts in this field, Mills Oakley, and through their expertise and in depth knowledge of the sector we can deliver a high quality and real value add product for schools,” Francis said.
