Square announced Wednesday the launch of a software development kit that allows merchants to process payments on Square inside their mobile app. The San Francisco-based firm said the SDK will let developers write a few lines of code and add square to their iOS or Android apps, which are available in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada and Japan, according to a press release. The SDK is also available on Flutter. Square said the kit makes it the only platform with first-party products that provide for in-person, web and mobile app transactions
"With the introduction of in-app mobile payments to the Square platform, developers now have a complete, omnichannel payments solution for all their payments needs," Carl Perry, developer lead at Square, said in the release. Buyers can use credit or debit cards for purchases or use digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, according to Square. Among the companies that beta-tested the SDK was PepperHQ, which creates merchant branded mobile apps for hospitality companies and Brushfire, a ticketing and registration platform. Brushfire officials said the SDK increased conversion rates by 20 percent.

One company beta-testing the Square In-App Payments SDK was PepperHQ, which creates customized, merchant-branded mobile apps for hospitality companies looking for mobile payments, order ahead solutions, and more. In partnership with Square, Pepper provides seamless integration of ordering and payment in to a merchant's systems and operations. Pepper used the In-App Payments SDK so that their merchant customers can use the same payments provider in their mobile app that they use in store. "With this SDK, Square took care of a lot of the heavy lifting of storing card information, processing transactions and more. Using Square for payments alongside sending pickup orders for fulfilment into Square’s Point of Sale, reduces complexity and means that Pepper can implement apps quicker, with less fuss for merchants.” said Adam Robinson, Chief Product Officer at PepperHQ. “The Square In-App Payments SDK is a slicker implementation than other options in the market and felt frictionless from the beginning. Brushfire, a fast-growing ticketing and registration platform, also has been using the SDK through the beta program. Brushfire was able to quickly integrate Square’s In-App Payments SDK into their mobile apps to allow customers to easily buy tickets at local events, increasing conversion by more than 20%. There’s a fortune to be made in mobile in-app billing. In-app purchases accounted for 43 percent of mobile app revenues in 2017, according to Statista , and in-app revenues are set to reach $117.2 million in 2020, up from $40.5 billion in 2015. With cash like that at stake, it’s no wonder that Square wants a cut of the action. The San Francisco company today announced Square In-App Payments SDK, a suite of tools for iOS, Android, and Flutter that allows developers and sellers to accept payments within their own apps. It’s available today in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and Japan. Carl Perry, developer lead at Square, pointed out that now, businesses can use Square’s platform to accept payments in every major channel: brick-and-mortar, online, and on mobile. “With the introduction of in-app mobile payments to the Square platform, developers now have a complete, omnichannel payments solution for all their payment needs,” Perry said. “From software to hardware to services, Square offers a complete payments experience all in one cohesive open platform. Even better, developers and sellers can manage all their payments across in-store, mobile, and online all in one place.”
According to Square, adding in-app payments support to a mobile app requires no more than a few lines of code. Contained within the SDK is an onboarding flow that guides customers through the payments process, instructing them first to add payment methods — e.g., debit cards, credit cards, or digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay — and then to choose how they’d like to pay. They also get an option to save payment methods for future purchases. As for developers, they have the freedom to update individual elements to match an app’s style. Or they can customize the look and feel from top to bottom, if they so choose. PepperHQ — a developer of mobile ordering and loyalty apps for restaurants, cafes, and other hospitality businesses — was an early adopter of Square’s In-App Payments SDK. Because it already used Square to integrate ordering and payment into merchants’ systems and operations, its decision to adopt the dev kit meant its merchant clients could use the same payments provider in-app and in-store. Bushfire, an online event registration and ticketing vendor and another willing In-App Payments SDK guinea pig, integrated the kit into its mobile apps to allow customers to reserve seats at local events. Conversion saw an uptick of 20 percent after it did, Jorin Slaybaugh, technology lead at Brushfire, said. “Square’s in-app payments SDK was painless and easy to use,” he said. “We loved it from a technical standpoint: It allowed us to do something that was literally impossible for us to before, and we were able to do it easier than ever. That’s all that matters to developers.”
The debut of Square’s In-Apps Payments SDK was preceded by the broad launch of Square Appointments , its reservation scheduling platform. Square integrated Appointments with Instagram and Google services in December 2018. Earlier in 2018, Square rolled out firmware improvements  to its  Square Contactless and Chip Reader , which cut processing time for card transactions from 3.6 seconds to 2 seconds. And in April, Square acquired Weebly , a web-hosting service and web design platform, and Zesty, a catering platform. Square at the time that said both Zesty and Entrees On-Trays, which it snapped up in January, would be used to bolster its Caviar food delivery business.

Square , the payments app founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey , is making it easier for app developers to charge customers within their mobile experiences. Today, the company launched its new Square In-App Payments Software Development Kit (SDK) , which is available for iOS, Android, and Google’s Flutter framework . The Square In-App Payments SDK lets developers take payments from users using just a few lines of code. It supports traditional credit and debit cards, as well as both Google Pay and Apple Pay. Developers can also use the SDK to allow users to securely save their payment card information, for subsequent transactions. It also comes with a built-in checkout process, although developers can customize it to their own branding needs, if required. Crucially, it does all this in a way that complies with the existing PCI-DSS industry rules, which dictate how card information should be securely captured, stored, and processed. PCI-DSS compliance is important for two reasons: firstly, if you’re not using something like Square (or one of its many rivals), achieving this is incredibly costly and time-consuming. furthermore, failure to comply can see companies fined tremendous sums of money by card services, the likes of which Visa and Mastercard. Square has quietly been beta-testing its new In-App Payments SDK with a select group of customers. One of these is PepperHQ — a London-based company that develops apps for the hospitality sector. In a statement, the company’s Chief Product Officer, Adam Robinson, said:
“With this SDK, Square took care of a lot of the heavy lifting of storing card information, processing transactions and more. Using Square for payments alongside sending pickup orders for fulfillment into Square’s Point of Sale, reduces complexity and means that Pepper can implement apps quicker, with less fuss for merchants.”
Of course, Square’s In-App Payments SDK mirrors functionality found in other similar solutions from the likes of Stripe and PayPal’s Braintree Payments. The launch of this SDK, however, is significant because it shows Stripe diversifying from its historical  bread-and-butter — in-person payments. With the launch of the In-App Payments SDK, Square can now let vendors take payments on-site, through the web, and via their mobile apps. This is something that the other big two payments startups don’t offer. Businesses wanting to keep things simple and use as few providers as possible will likely find this an attractive proposition.
