Spellers™ Method Launches TV Series For Autism Awareness

In a breakthrough for what Spellers Freedom Foundationinterim executive director Dawnmarie Gaivin terms a “big civil rights movement,” four nonspeaking autistic individuals have teamed with Anheuser-Busch’s Golden Road Brewing todevelop Get on Board Hazy IPA, a limited-edition regional craft beer. Launching this month at select Southern California retailers, all proceeds will benefit the foundation, which awardsscholarships to the nonspeaking autistic community. “Until recently, no one thought they were intelligent because they didn’t have a way to communicate what was inside theirbrains,” Gaivin tells Marketing Daily about the estimated 31 million nonspeaking autistic people worldwide. That began to change a few years ago when Gaivin co-founded the SpellersMethod, which combines letterboard communication with occupational therapy. advertisement

Gaivin and Golden Road Brewing co-founder and president Meg Gill both have non-speaking autistic children, whichhelped lead to the collaboration behind Get on Board, a hazy IPA brewed with real citrus, and with flavors described by the brewery as “juicy orange, eureka lemon and subtle peach.”
The recipe and product name came from nonspeakers, four of whom (all over 21) worked with Golden Road in-person to develop the ale, Gaivin says. Golden Road’s team members “werevery open-minded but had never met anyone with nonspeaking autism,” she recalls. But they “collaborated with them from day one until the final product, took direction from the spellers andbrought their dream to life. It shows what society can be.”
The brewer tells Marketing Daily that Gill “wanted to find ways to bring awareness of the amazing work Spellersis doing.”
Also out to increase awareness of non-speaking autistic people, JB Handley and his nonspeaking autistic son Jamison co-wrote the 2021 book, “Underestimated: An AutismMiracle,” and also co-founded the Spellers Freedom Foundation. The book led to a 2023 documentary film “Spellers,” co-produced by the foundation -- with actors JennyMcCarthy-Wahlberg and husband Donnie Walhberg as executive producers -- which has played the film festival circuit and will debut for free on YouTube in mid-April. The film in turn has led toa weekly documentary TV series titled “Underestimated, the Heroic Rise of Nonspeaking Spellers,” whose weekly five-episode first season will launch online May 25 for $24.99. All moneyraised will go to pay back investors and towardsproduction of new episodes for future seasons, Gaivin says. The third episode of the series, titled “Crafty Collaboration,”documents the development of Get on Board Hazy IPA, with other episodes focusing on such topics as education reform, self-advocacy in healthcare, and the use of spelling as a communication method fornon-speakers with Down’s syndrome. Golden Road, meanwhile, has “committed to creating a new beer with Spellers Freedom Foundation every year,” Gaivin reveals. She also hopesthat Get on Board can “create enough of a stir and sell out” so that the beer gets brought back next fall and could even become a year-round product. Already, Get on Board Hazy IPA“has the potential to be our biggest fundraiser to date,” she says. Beyond Golden Road, she sees the possibility “of multiple opportunities… with other vendors andagencies.”
Asked if that could include other Anheuser-Busch regional craft brewers, she responds, “We are open if Anheuser-Busch is interested." She adds, "This is a momentin history where people for the first time are realizing the capabilities of nonspeakers.”
For reasons not clear, the number of autistic people has grown more than 300% over the past 15years, she notes, “so there’s just going to be more and more nonspeaking autistic people, and finding ways for us to all work together is a brilliant step in the rightdirection.”

For its latest seasonal release, Southern California’s Golden Road Brewing came up with a generously hopped and fruity beer dubbed the Get On Board Hazy IPA. Brewed with real citrus and showcasing flavors of juicy orange, eureka lemon and subtle peach, it’s meant to pair well with the spring season. But there is a lot more meaning behind this beer. It has a deep personal connection to the brewery’s founder and was created in collaboration with members of the autistic community. “This is the most special beer we’ve ever created,” said Golden Road founder Meg Gill, whose 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with non-speaking autism and was the catalyst for this collaboration. “It brings together my first baby, the business, and my real first baby, and it gives back to a community that I feel has brought me the gift of communication with my daughter.”

The new beer will be released at the brewery’s Anaheim location on Tuesday, April 2, which is World Autism Awareness Day. It was created with the help of four non-speaking autistic individuals who use a letterboard method to point out letters and spell out words. They used this system to collaborate with brewers in the creation of the new beer, from hops to can. “The four spellers created the beer recipe, style and the creation of the marketing,” Gill said. The collaborators, who were nicknamed the Fab Four, are members of  the nonprofit Speller’s Freedom Foundation, which helps non-speaking autistic people learn to communicate. They are also featured on an upcoming five-episode online series titled “Underestimated: The Heroic Rise of Nonspeaking Spellers.” The series will launch on underestimated.tv on Sunday, May 26 and episode 3 will feature the collaboration with Golden Road. To create the new IPA, the Fab Four first took lessons on beer making and marketing from Golden Road brewers with the help of spelling therapists before selecting the beer style. The process took about six months, and yes, the Fab Four are all older than 21, so they can taste their creation. “It’s floral, citrusy, happy deliciousness. And we’re very excited for the release,” Gill said. “And they loved the beer,” she added, referring to the Fab Four, who will also be in attendance at the release party. More importantly for Gill, the collaboration will bring attention to the non-speaking autistic community and all net proceeds of Get On Board Hazy IPA sales will benefit the Speller’s Freedom Foundation. “Having a daughter who was diagnosed with non-speaking autism and getting connected with different ways of communication has been challenging, but also a bright light in our world,” Gill said. “The brewery hopefully can be a positive example to the community of how to truly be inclusive for people with disabilities as well.”

USA – Beverage giant AB InBev has decided to shut down two of its U.S. breweries, Wynwood Brewing in Miami, Florida, and Golden Road Brewing in Sacramento, California. The closures come as part of a broader effort to optimize operations and focus on key brands in the competitive craft beer market. Wynwood Brewing, which had been acquired by the Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) in 2016, will cease operations at its brewery and taproom on February 4. Despite the closure, the iconic Wynwood Brewing flagship brand, La Rubia, along with other popular brews such as Laces IPA, Father Francisco Belgian-style golden ale, and Pop’s Porter, will continue production. Megan Ruiz-Necuze, commercial director of La Rubia, emphasized the importance of the brand, stating, “It was quickly embraced by the community here, and the brand has really taken off, with its success becoming increasingly pivotal to our operations.”
Wynwood Brewing is set to merge with its sister business, Veza Sur, located “just up the street” in Miami. Ruiz-Necuze added, “Moving to the Veza Sur brewpub will allow us to focus on La Rubia and continue to brew signature Wynwood beers like Father Francisco and Pop’s Porter.”
Similarly, AB InBev has decided to close Golden Road Brewing in Sacramento this week. Established in 2011 by Meg Gill, one of the few female founders in the U.S. craft brewing scene, Golden Road joined forces with Anheuser-Busch in 2015 to facilitate national distribution and leverage its capacity for larger-scale brewing. Craig Weiner, Golden Road’s general manager, assured that the closure of the brewery would not mean the dissolution of the brand, with its beers continuing to be available at “bars, restaurants, and bottle shops.”
These closures follow AB InBev’s recent trend of streamlining its craft beer portfolio. Last August, the company entered into a definitive agreement with Tilray, an American pharmaceutical, cannabis-lifestyle and consumer packaged goods company, to divest eight beer and beverage brands. The announcement comes after AB InBev secured top-level sponsorship of the Olympics, marking a significant milestone in the beverage industry. The non-alcoholic Corona Cero brand will serve as the official beer sponsor of the Olympic Games until 2028, covering three Olympic events: the upcoming summer games in Paris, the Milan 2026 winter games, and the LA summer games in 2028, as well as marketing rights for the Paralympic Games.
