According to Commtouch's Internet Threats Trend Report for the first quarter of 2013, an average of 97.4 billion spam e-mails and 973 million malware e-mails were sent worldwide each day in Q1 2013 (h/t Softpedia ). From December of 2012 to March of 2013, spam levels increased by 98 percent, phishing e-mails rose by more than 74 percent, and the levels of e-mails delivering malware rose by 157 percent. In March of 2013, the report states, the average number of daily spam e-mails reached 117.8 billion. From February 2013 to March 2013, spam levels increased by 41 percent, though phishing e-mails only increased by eight percent. In the first quarter of 2013, the United States was the leading source of spam with a 9.1 percent share of the overall volume, followed by Belarus at 6.5 percent, Spain at 5.6 percent, Argentina at 5.0 percent and India at 4.3 percent. "The dramatic rise in the quantity of unwanted and dangerous emails during the first quarter of 2013 shows that email communication is still one of the key attack vectors," Commtouch director of threat research and market analysis Avi Turiel said in a statement . "Email is still the most popular communication tool for private users and businesses alike, making it an attractive target for cybercriminals. "
