Real estate tech deal activity hit all time-highs in Q1’16 with 56 deals. With deal volume hitting record levels, we updated our recent analysis of the top investors in real estate tech, as well as the accompanying infographic.
Which firms are most active? Which VCs have emerged as active real estate tech investors?
As noted in other real estate tech posts, our real estate technology category encompasses all the software tools and platforms used by different participants in the real estate industry, including brokers, investors, real estate-focused lenders, commercial property owners and managers, as well as buyers. The category includes online real estate rental and buying guides, but excludes startups primarily focused on in-building services, e.g. office management.
500 Startups tops the list as the most active investor in real estate tech. Thrive Capital was the second-most active investor in real estate tech, with some notable investments, ranging from tech-enabled brokerages to mortgage tech software. New investors in the graphic include RRE Ventures, Felicis Ventures, and MetaProp.
Here are other takeaways from our analysis:
- 500 Startups adds one investment in 2016 in real estate analytics software company BetterView, and builds off a strong 2015 in which they placed bets on real estate startups such as mortgage platform Lenda and real estate agent-matching service HomeLight.
- Thrive, Frontier Digital, SV Angel, BoxGroup, and DCM Ventures — all included in our previous 3/4/16 infographic — remain among the top investors in the category.
- RRE Ventures is now among the most active real estate tech investors. Their bets range from virtual viewing companies like Floored to commercial real estate tech-enabled brokerages like TheSquareFoot, among others.
- Felicis Ventures has placed bets on two virtual viewing companies: Floored and Matterport. Some of their other investments include the backing of Opendoor Labs, the instant home-selling and buying startup founded by investor Keith Rabois.
- MetaProp, mainly known for their real estate tech accelerator, launched a VC fund and has quickly gotten active in real estate tech investing. MetaProp’s investments span mortgage tech startups like Eave to property management software like Rentalutions, among other companies.
