Google Ventures is among the most active seed investors in the VC ecosystem. But when the corporate venture group truly believes in a team, product and vision, it isn’t afraid to write a nine-figure check.
This week marked the latest example of Google Ventures’ participation in a eye-popping mega round, as the firm led a $130M financing into New York-based healthcare data platform Flatiron Health. Fewer than two months ago, Google Ventures participated in what eventually concluded as a $900M Series F to commercial Hadoop distributor Cloudera.
So given the news, we wanted to highlight the top 10 largest financing rounds that Google Ventures has participated in since inception. The largest is Cloudera’s $900M Series F, $740M of which came from Intel Capital. Flatiron Health’s Series B comes in third, behind Uber’s Series C announced last August. Interestingly, while some of the mega deals including Nest and Silver Spring Networks have since exited, GV hasn’t been immune to misses. Plastics car company Next Autoworks (formerly V-Vehicle) has seen plans stall.
It’s also worth noting that Google itself has participated in a number of large clean energy project financings including to SolarCity and BrightSource Energy while its late-stage investing arm Google Capital last year participated in SurveyMonkey’s massive $444M secondary investment. We track those investments but are not considered below as they were not made by Google Ventures but by other Google investment vehicles/groups.
