For Hack Day #14, a team reconstructed our New York City-based office in a video game.
At CB Insights, employees have the opportunity to participate in Hack Day: 24 hours where teammates pair up with anyone to work on anything — as long as it’s CBI-related. At the end of the 24 hours, people demo their projects and vote for their favorites across 3 categories:
- Most creative
- Most useful
- Most impressive
During our latest Hack Day, Director of Engineering Julien Capron set out to recreate the CB Insights office using Minecraft.
Minecraft is a sandbox game where you can build virtually anything. It is block-based, meaning you can dig blocks and you can stack them. Julien used the creative mode, which gave him access to all materials he needed to build.
Since everything in the game is block-based, he used the block as the unit of measure and started with a rough floor plan, then added walls.
He used a blueprint of our office as a guideline to count all of the seats that we have to make it as close as possible to the real thing.
Here is the final screenshot of the Minecraft office (left) next to our office blueprint.
And here are some screenshots of the final product, alongside snapshots of the real office.
There’s even a secret speakeasy called The Chubby Unicorn.
If you want to be part of the next Hack Day and have the opportunity to experiment on anything you want, we’re hiring!
