From sensor tech to quantum computing, companies in the semiconductor industry are making the technology more powerful and efficient.
Semiconductors are critical components for consumer electronics, automobiles, AR/VR applications, quantum computing systems, and much more. For example, modern cars use over 3,000 chips per vehicle, and televisions require multiple semiconductors from the OLED display to the processor.
Semiconductor sales grew 26% in 2021 and are expected to increase nearly 9% in 2022, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. And as the industry quickly advances due to everything from increased demand for electronics to the quest for secure supply chains, startups are emerging to make the technology more capable and efficient to meet the specific needs of the future.
Companies like GaN Systems and Exagan are making gallium nitride (GaN) power electronics for automotive, solar, wind, and industrial applications. Meanwhile, Tenstorrent is developing high performance processors to power artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning applications, and Rigetti Computing is working on quantum integrated circuits.
