Edtech investment activity is on track for a strong year. Driven by several $100M+ mega-rounds, funding has surpassed 2019 levels, with over $4.8B raised in 2020 year-to-date (as of August). Amid a widespread shift to remote learning due to Covid-19, startups offering mobile-based tools and more immersive learning experiences through augmented/virtual reality are gaining traction.
While the majority of deals so far this year have gone to early-stage startups, 2 mega-rounds raised by China-based unicorns — a $1B Series G round to Yuanfudao in March and a $750M Series E round to Zuoyebang in June — account for over a third of the equity funding raised in the first 8 months of 2020.
