Sometimes, we get enamored with the idea of building new fancy capabilities into CB Insights. And we forget that there are some existing capabilities that deserve some TLC.
One of those is the CB Insights Chrome Plugin.
In the last couple of months, both Steve Schlafman of RRE (@schlaf) and Amish Jani of FirstMark Capital (@amishjani) were nice enough to come by our office and talk with our product/engineering team about how they use CB Insights, how they’d like to use it and what we could be doing better.
Both of them casually mentioned they love our Chrome Plugin and use it regularly. We subsequently talked to a bunch of our customers and we kept hearing that message. The reviews in the Chrome store left by the likes of Connor Theilmann of Accel, Keith Muhart of Qualcomm Ventures and Jigar Patel of Silicon Valley Bank also confirmed the utility of the plugin.
And so we got our act together and are happy to announce that we’ve integrated a couple of new data fields into the Chrome Plugin – specifically comparable companies and company news.
Here’s how the plugin looks with the addition of these fields.
Company financing data
When you highlight the text in an article or if you’re on the company’s website, you’ll see the financing history for the company (this is what the Chrome Plugin has enabled since the beginning). This is an example for an article from Skift about GrabTaxi’s $250 million funding round led by Softbank.
Company comparables / competitors
You’ll also see a tab called Comps which lists comparable/competitive companies. In the case of GrabTaxi, we see a 4 highlighted which indicates there are 4 comps for this company. The tab reveals that they are Uber, Didi Dache, Lyft and Hailo along with their individual funding totals.
Company News
The final tab, News, as its name implies lists recent news articles about GrabTaxi.
It’s worth noting that these are the first aspects of the plugin which are restricted only to paid customers of CB Insights. To date, the plugin has been free to use for anyone with even a free basic CB Insights account and that continues (sign up here for an account), but new data being integrated into it such as comparables and news is for premium customers only.
Like before, the plugin works when visiting a company’s website. Here is an example of the Plugin in-action when visiting the website of New Relic where the Chrome plugin reveals 19 comparables.
