We've identified at least 64 marketplace companies that have shut down since 2009.
Kumai, a used-goods marketplace launched by Chinese e-commerce site JD.com, shut down earlier this month. In all, we identified 11 marketplace startups that have shut down this year, meaning this year is on track to surpass last year’s 16 marketplace startup deaths.
The marketplace business model has powered some companies like Airbnb, eBay, andAmazon, but there have been notable failures too. We’ve identified at least 64 marketplace companies across the globe that have shut down since 2009.
These companies had raised a total of $394M in funding across 86 deals before failing.
