Food and beverage investors like AccelFoods dominate the CPG startup landscape, but a handful of the most active CPG investors, including VMG Partners, back food and beauty & grooming startups.
While major corporations have historically dominated the CPG sector, startup activity is taking off – and investors are taking note. Deals to food and beverage startups and beauty and grooming startups are racing toward record highs this year.
Using the CB Insights platform, we identified the most active investors in consumer packaged goods startups since 2012, and ranked them by number of CPG portfolio companies.
Not surprisingly, AccelFoods, a venture fund focused on food and beverage, leads with 30+ CPG portfolio companies since 2012. It tends to make small seed investments, but has also participated in slightly larger deals, including a $10M Series B to frozen meal startup Kidfresh in April 2017, a $7.5M seed round to healthy beverage startup Koia in July 2017, and a $4M Series A to insect protein startup Exo in March 2016.
