In recent years, artificial intelligence has become a growing priority for Microsoft.
During a July 2018 keynote address, the company’s CEO Satya Nadella expressed just how central the technology is to all areas of the Microsoft business, stating that Microsoft “will infuse everything with AI.”

The company’s recent research activity also supports Nadella’s past claims and leadership directives. Since 2012, Microsoft has applied for over 1,000 patents related to artificial intelligence or machine learning.
Although the patent data from 2017 and 2018 is not yet complete, Microsoft has shown record high interest in R&D related to AI over the past few years.
And while many of these patents won’t necessarily become products, Microsoft’s interest alone suggests that artificial intelligence and machine learning will be a primary focus for years to come.
