The microbiome — the community of bacteria, yeast, viruses, and fungi that survive in and on living organisms — has been touted as the key to treating ailments ranging from digestive distress, to weight loss, to acne, to anxiety and depression.
But its potential uses aren’t limited to treating illness.
Startups are looking to the microbiome for solutions to stimulating healthy crop growth and healthy milk production, diagnosing a wide range of diseases, and improving general well-being.
