The Digital Hospital: 100+ Companies Reinventing Medicine In One Infographic

Digital health continues to be on investors’ minds, as funding to the industry hit a record last year of over $6.7B. At the current run rate, 2017 is on track to reach a new high of $9B.

Startups in the digital health sector vary widely, from heart rate tracking wearables to chronic care monitoring technology to specialist referral platforms. Using the CB Insights database, we identified 105 private digital health companies that have a direct impact on hospital care and mapped them according to 14 categories within the space. Among other initiatives, these companies are changing the way referrals are processed, medication is delivered, and medical records are stored.

Here are the digital health categories in our map:

Care Management: Companies creating tools to aid in the development of, and compliance with, treatment plans. One example is HealthLoop, a cloud-based platform that automates follow-up care and tracks patient progress.

EMR/Practice Management: Companies focused on replacing or complementing conventional health record systems, such as Augmedix, which uses Google Glass to push information to Electronic Health Records.

Communication: Companies developing tools to facilitate intra-hospital communication between healthcare workers with one another and/or between healthcare workers and patients. Florida-based Voalte developed a secure messaging service for nurses and physicians.

Diagnostics: Companies developing diagnostic solutions that have a digital component. Examples include Genalyte, which developed a rapid, point-of-care blood diagnostics platform, and Freenome, a next-gen cancer diagnostics company applying AI to liquid biopsies.

Surgery: Companies developing digital tools designed to be used by surgeons or in the operating room. Gauss Surgical has developed a surgical blood-loss monitoring system that runs on an iPad.

Appointments & Referrals: Companies focused on platforms that help physicians identify and recommend specialists for the transfer of care. AristaMD, for instance, has developed a software intelligence platform to help primary care physicians.

Clinical Decision Support: Companies in this category develop wide-ranging solutions that aid physicians in determining a proper course of action for a particular patient. Examples include Lumiata, a predictive analytics company that calculates the likely progression of chronic disease in a patient, and Oncora Medical, developers of big data and machine learning software that enables the design of personalized radiation treatments for oncology patients.

Patient Experience: Companies such as NarrativeDx are working to either measure or improve the patient experience within the hospital.

Infection Control: Companies developing tools to help maintain proper hygiene, such as Swipe Sense, which develops sensors that track hand hygiene dispenser usage throughout hospitals.

Readmissions / Emergency Department: Companies like operations-focused data analysis company Qventus are working to optimize patient intake and experience in the emergency department.

Hospital Navigation: Companies such as Gozio Health, a smartphone-based indoor positioning and wayfinding platform, develop digital tools designed to help patients and staff better find their way around the hospital.

Pharmacy: Companies working in inventory management, prescription delivery, and/or prescription verification. Talyst, for example, develops medication inventory software, while others include PillPack and Capsule, two prescription delivery platforms.

Patient Monitoring: Companies working on continuous bedside or remote monitoring of patient status. One such company is Missouri-based MediBeacon, which offers real-time tracking of kidney function.

Radiology: Companies like Arterys and Zebra Medical Vision are developing advanced visualization and image analysis tools to aid physicians in making a diagnosis.
