The beverage category is evolving to serve consumers’ increased interest in sustainability, immunity and nutrition, and hyper-targeted products, leading to the rise of brands selling everything from pea milk to probiotic hangover drinks.
Beverage technology companies are emerging to support the shifting environment. Recent deal activity shows increasing investor interest in categories like water refill services, which provide a more sustainable alternative to bottled water.
Industry leaders are already responding. For example, Coca-Cola acquired natural sports and hydration drink BodyArmor in February 2021, while Unilever acquired hydration company Liquid I.V. in September 2020, highlighting incumbents’ growing interests in hydration and recovery.
