American have spent more money on food-away-from-home options, like at restaurants, than they have on food-at-home since 2010, per the USDA. The biggest reversals of this trend in the past were during recessions, e.g., during the 2008 crisis, when cash was scarce.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 may prove to be no different, as quarantined consumers grow accustomed to cooking and eating at home. Fifty-seven percent of consumers are cooking at home more than they did before the Covid-19 crisis and nearly a third expect to cook at home more in the future, according to an AMC Global survey.
