Apple has 22 known patents for bulk metallic glass (BMG).
Our Patent Search Engine found a couple of patents for Apple granted in May around the advanced manufacturing of new materials. Here is the search showing patents related to bulk metallic glass (BMG) production. That’s in addition to 21 other known patent grants or applications from the company for this material, which is already used in some consumer goods, including Apple devices, wristwatches, and golf clubs.
Bulk metallic glass is a material that cools differently than a traditional metal or ceramics — the latter which Apple has already experimented with in products like its laptops and iPhone — and so displays unique properties once it’s put into use.
These qualities include strength (2x that of stainless steel, but lighter), hardness (scratch resistance), and toughness (more fracture resistant than ceramics).
