We’ve just put out a new report looking at companies that are battling aging and age-related diseases. Not dying is so hot right now. See the full report.
Not going to spoil the whole report for you, but a couple of comments.
Second, even if there was a 100% guaranteed link between calorie restriction today and extended lifespan later, I’m not sure if I can do it. Food is just so damn good, I would have absolutely failed the marshmallow test. Third, how many institutions need to be rethought if longevity spikes again? There’s the obvious life and health insurance piece, where risk has to be re-examined. But there are larger societal implications like Social Security benefits, political positions that have life long terms (e.g. the Supreme Court), etc. Any others you can think of?
Live Long and Prosper
Speaking of insurance, for expert intelligence clients we put together a market map of the US insurance tech landscape (both on the B2B and B2C side). See it here.
How long until life insurers start giving benefits to members if they start intermittent fasting? There are apps to track that now.
One-A-Days
I was at a conference recently and several people that worked at life and health insurance companies mentioned that their biggest worry were companies with daily active users. The daily use companies had a great distribution for “occasional use” products and ways to proactively nudge consumers, vs. the insurers, where people only interact with products when they actively need them.
One of the struggle points for existing healthcare companies is going to be figuring out how to have daily interactions with their users. Oscar, for example, can use the step counting feature in its app both as an incentive program AND as a way to get its consumers to interact with it daily.
Wellness companies have an advantage here because they can plug themselves into consumers’ day-to-day lives. We did a deep dive into the wellness industry, including a potential “future day-in-the life” and how companies are plugging into this routine. See the report here.
Dentist’s Nightmare
In the “definitely not wellness” category, we put together a market map of companies you might find in your goodie bag this year. See them here.
