Sep 24, 2023
September 24, 2023 Motorola wants to conquer the Hungarian mobile market by leaps and bounds, but this requires not only good devices, but also a brazenly good price. The predecessor of the Motorola Edge 40 Neo, the 30 Neo, was released about a year ago, but the problem is not with your memory, if you don’t remember: at that time you couldn’t really get it from domestic retailers. The situation has changed a lot in the past year, and Motorola, which is owned by Lenovo but operates as a completely separate company, has now signed contracts with all three service providers and most large electronics stores, so you can run into the new Edge device almost anywhere. Trendy colors, an elegant exterior, a huge display and an attractive price – but is it worth paying for an Edge 40 Neo? On the outside, it looks like more It complements Motorola’s two Edge 40 mobiles already on the market the Neo version , which lacks some things, has been renewed in some things, and has a friendly price. The front of the medium-sized mobile is occupied by a rounded 6.55-inch display, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 from scratches. Motorola chose a P-OLED panel with FHD+ resolution, which provides excellent color fidelity and an enormous brightness of up to 1300 nits, and it refreshes at 144 Hz and is also HDR10+ compatible. There are unusually thin buttons on the side bezel, and a dual-lens camera island on the back that protrudes by roughly 2mm. Both the frame and the back are made of plastic, in our case the back of the light blue (Pantone Caneel Bay) model has a vegan leather effect coating, which does not attract fingerprints and is not slippery. The manufacturer also put a case in the box that matches the color of the phone, which was made together with a company called agood company, and the interesting thing is that it was made from 100% plant-based materials in an environmentally friendly way in Sweden. When it comes to the contents of the box, it is worth mentioning that Motorola does not support the long line of stingy companies: here, in addition to the phone and the case, you get the Type-C-Type-C cable and the fast charging head that matches the mobile phone. The Edge 40 Neo is also proud of the fact that, unlike some of its similarly priced competitors, stereo speakers have been included, and we can also enjoy full IP68 protection. Evolutionary progress There are no shocking surprises when it comes to the inside of the Edge 40 Neo – neither in a good way nor in a bad way. The mobile is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7030 coupled with a respectable amount of 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The latter does not hurt either, because the phone does not accept an SD card, instead it has a dual SIM and, as a novelty, it also handles eSIMs (1 physical SIM and one eSIM). Among the rear double camera, the main module is really interesting with its 50 MP sensor and optical image stabilizer. This is accompanied by an aperture value of f/1.8, as well as an LED flash, HDR, many functions and 4K/30fps video recording. The ultra-wide-angle secondary camera works with a 13 MP sensor and did not receive OIS, but the autofocus was not left out. The front selfie camera is located in the middle of the upper part of the display, works with a 32 MP sensor and, in addition to HDR, also supports 4K/30 fps video recording. Of course, the Edge 40 Neo supports all important wireless standards, so in addition to Wi-Fi 6E we can also enjoy full 5G, BT5.3 is the latest possible, there is a triple-system GPS, NFC, hardware proximity sensor (more and more manufacturers are solving this with software with a selfie camera), as well as a fingerprint reader under the display. The mobile phone has a 5000 mAh, relatively high-capacity battery, which can be charged with up to 68 Watts with the included charging head, so that the mobile phone can be charged to 50% in 15 minutes. Not a speed king, but attractive in many ways The Motorola Edge 40 Neo has a very difficult task: to conquer the mid-range category, crushing opponents such as the Samsung A-series, Xiaomi, Nothing or Honor, which are not afraid of some price war and extra marketing. A beautiful device is not enough for this, it must also perform. The Dimensity 7030 was new to us, so we were curious to see what scores it would achieve during the tests. The Geekbench and AnTuTu measurements showed that the MediaTek chip is definitely better than the most popular SoC of recent years, the Snapdragon 695, in all respects, but it cannot overtake the other popular, mid-range Snapdragon 778G – the two cores are roughly on the same level chip. This means that the mobile phone is slightly faster than the Honor 70 and the Samsung Galaxy A54, but it can no longer catch up with the Honor 90, for example. During real use, no one will blink with the super performance of the mobile phone, but the completely clean, almost chemically clean Android 13 interface does not hesitate, and the programs also start quickly, nothing hangs up the feed scrolling. PCMark and 3DMark show the performance during real use excellently, and the scores achieved under these also confirm that we get an absolutely mid-range, acceptable performance, and thanks to the 12 GB RAM, the mobile does not freeze even when running several apps at the same time . The display did what was required: thanks to its wonderful colors and high brightness, it stands out from some competitors. We can’t complain about the operating time either, since the economical chip and the large battery pair are enough for up to 2 days of average use, and if the mobile does run out of power, you can pump up the charge in minutes with the fast charger. Unfortunately, the Wireless charging available on its predecessor and its bigger brothers has been omitted, and we would have been very happy with this even if the phone was a hair thicker in return. The fingerprint reader is fast and makes few mistakes, but facial recognition takes a little longer to unlock than is comfortable. The stereo speakers sound nice, although not very loud. The main camera of the Edge 40 Neo takes very good pictures in good light conditions, and in the dark, OIS helps to avoid blurry, blurry pictures. You can also take nice pictures with the ultra-wide-angle camera, although, as is often the case in this price segment, the detail and colors are no longer as accurate and beautiful as with the main camera. Fortunately, there is also autofocus here, so sharpness will not be a problem, and macro photography also works. Selfies are vivid and bright, with little blurring. For videos, it is also worth trying the fixed water level, in which case the phone records in FHD, but it always makes sure that the horizontal is really horizontal, even if we move the mobile phone. The end result is very spectacular, especially for dynamic, busy, sports or animal videos. We recommend video recording with the ultra-wide-angle camera only in better lighting conditions, if there is less light, the details will be lost and the image will be a bit blurry. What was disturbing, however, was the stuttering when switching between modes and front and back cameras. Also, the phone thinks a little more than usual when post-processing the pictures, if, say, you choose to look back immediately after taking a photo. Hopefully Motorola engineers will fix this with a software update. On the raw Android 13 interface, there are only a few Motorola extras that are not specifically intrusive, which the manufacturer has also collected in a separate app. Most of these are useful additions that are easy to get used to and like (for example, turning on the flashlight to double shake the phone) – it’s worth going through them and activating them to see what extras they add to usability. Moto Security is also a useful function, with which you can encrypt the PIN keyboard, protect your network connection, create a security folder and also get some protection against phishing. The company does not rely on Microsoft’s solution for the PC-mobile connection either. After easy device pairing, its own Ready For technology provides full access between your Windows computer and your Moto Edge 40 Neo phone. File transfer, screen mirroring, phone call, message reply, webcam function work, and even clipboards are connected by Motorola’s application. Summary The Edge 40 Neo is a well-assembled and skillfully balanced mobile phone with a realistic introductory price of HUF 154,990. For this amount of money, you get a designer mobile phone that is strong enough for everyday use, with good photography capabilities, and whose user interface is clean but with a few extras that you can easily like. The Dimensity 7030 does what is required, but does not leave the competition in the dust, just as the main camera is good, but it cannot be said to be outstanding. Despite the thin design, a large battery and fast charging are nice extras, especially if you also get the charging head. The case is also a useful gift and you can enjoy the IP68 rating. At the same time, it can be found in the Edge 40, but the wireless charging that is missing from the Neo is a painful shortcoming (although the battery capacity is larger here in return), the average quality of the ultra-wide-angle camera did not convince me either, the operating time is only average and, unfortunately, for now Motorola is not trying to catch up in terms of software support for the competition: 2 main Android versions and a maximum of 3 years of security updates are expected for this model. The Motorola Edge 40 Neo has been given a serious task and the competitors are not making it easy for them. The main rivals have been on the market for quite some time and their prices have normalized during that time, so you can get them even below the fair HUF 155,000 level, be it the Samsung Galaxy A54, the Honor 70, or the Nothing Phone (1). The Xiaomi and Redmi lines are also worth checking out, here you can find excellent devices in the HUF 130-160 thousand range. An important advantage of the Motorola Edge 40 Neo is that it is offered by all three service providers and, according to our information, will be offered with attractive promotions, so you will be able to purchase it at a significantly lower price. *The article has been translated based on the content of PC World Online Hírek by pcworld.hu .
