WISE EdTech Accelerator Opens Applications

Feb 27, 2022

Derek Newton If you forgot Valentine’s Day, I have good news. You have until April 14 to fix it. Valentine’s Day was – quite obviously – when applications opened for the WISE EdTech Accelerator , the very influential and rapidly growing education opportunity for early stage entrepreneurs and their companies. Perhaps it’s excusable if you overlooked it. Perhaps. The application deadline is April 14. There are a handful of dedicated education accelerators around the world, perhaps even a few dozen. Of those, maybe four or five stand above the rest in influence and reputation – an earned consequence of giving their selected companies a sizeable boost, seeing them survive and prosper. And if it’s not already, the WISE Accelerator should be on the list of top-tier global education accelerators because, though it’s early in its own life cycle at just seven or eight years old, the large majority of its investees are not only still in business, most of them are growing. It’s a balance, of course. Startups are risky, unproven by definition. And accelerators should do more than just place bets on the surest things available. At the same time, incubators and accelerators with good post-investment track records are rightly seen as the leaders in the space. Success, as they say, is the ultimate metric. MORE FOR YOU But its success is not the primary reason why getting a company into the WISE Accelerator is a big deal. The real value is that WISE is a brand of the Qatar Foundation, one of the biggest, best resourced and impactful education movers around. The WISE commitment to education is so broad and deep that they actually built an entire city dedicated to it. WISE also, not coincidentally, gives out one of the largest annual prizes in education, a $500,000 award for leadership and innovation. The outfit also hosts influential education conferences around the world, inviting and including voices from people and places you don’t find at typical education conclaves. Given who’s behind the WISE Accelerator, it’s no surprise that their reach is global. The program’s partners include Visa and Education Alliance Finland. WISE accepts very few companies. Over eight years, it has accelerated just 40 companies. They are picky. That selectivity is good. And it’s remarkable considering how easy it is to apply, how open the process is. To be considered, a company just has to be in business for a year, present “evidence of existing beneficiaries or users,” be past the MVP (minimum viable product) stage and have revenue. That’s it. Well, that and apply by the April 14 deadline. For new education companies with their eyes on foreign markets, the WISE Accelerator is a smart place to be. It’s already the kind of deal that works like Y Combinator or Techstars or TechCrunch Disrupt – simply getting in is a valuable stamp of approval. And considering how deep and diverse and crowded the education entrepreneurship landscape is, especially internationally, the sorting and selecting power of prestigious and successful accelerators is especially valuable. As has been well chronicled, an Achilles Heel of global education is the lack of information and innovation sharing. In too many cases, people in one place simply don’t know what’s being tried and what’s working in other places. That’s why education conferences and journals and journalism matter. But, more significantly, it’s why accelerators matter – at least those few that prioritize scale and visibility over financial return. WISE is one of those. When I interviewed him for a profile last summer, Stavros Yiannouka, CEO at WISE, said they started the accelerator, “Not because we want to play the investment game, but to understand what was really happening in education, what was working, what was not working so well. And what better way to do that than to work with and support entrepreneurs who were working on it?” That too is a unique approach to acceleration. Not singular – other folks have similar missions and mandates. But it is rare. With the April 14 deadline just a few weeks away now, this unique opportunity to accelerate good education ideas and founders is here again. Hopefully, the WISE Accelerator inbox will be flooded with inquiries and applicants. And hopefully those leading the Accelerator will choose the newest cohort WISE-ly.
