Oxford Metrics back on form and seizing the 'augmented' opportunity

Dec 2, 2021

UKHotViews It looks like Oxford Metrics has fully thrown off COVID chains and with an updated five year plan is feeling confident about the future, with FY21 performance providing a strong base to build on. Across the year to 30 September 2021, revenue expanded 17.6% to £35.6m, a welcome contrast to the  14% decline of the prior year ., with ARR progressing too. Adjusted PBT rose from £2.6m to £4.8m with statutory PBT up 103% to £3.2m. Both the Vicon (motion measurement) and Yotta (asset management) divisions not only grew (21.1% and 7% respectively) but were profitable on adjusted PBT basis with Vicon increasing its level of profitability while Yotta moved into a slim profit. Vicon benefitted from demand from the video games sector and virtual production, while the pressure to digitally transform assets helped Yotta. As for the future, its new five year plan is centred around the “Augmented Age” – were humans and machines work in partnership, a collaboration the pandemic accelerated, as seen through faster adoption of tele-medicine, remote management and virtual production. This is an area TechMarketView has flagged up as a  key trend . In Oxford Metrics’ view it calls for Integrated Smart Sensing systems that go beyond image or sensed data and look after the full life cycle of the data – to sense, analyse, apply. These abilities are being enabled by improvements in sensing capability - lower cost, higher resolution, better imagers that can be combined with other rapidly improving sensors such as inertial, LIDAR and environmental sensors; and improvements in processing capability from GPUs (Neural Processing Units and other specialised processors) and  machine learning-enhanced software. As it extends its capabilities, we can expect both R&D and acquisitions ( CONTEMPLAS  was a recent example) and moves to broaden the applicability of its solutions and the range of applications they can be applied to. This is designed to translate into an increase in revenue to 2.5 times the 2020/21 levels by the end of the five-year period; and a return to historic 15% adjusted PBT by the end of the plan (investments and M&A will impact the earlier years). We’ve previously said the market was moving towards Oxford Metrics and with its own modernisation it is actively seizing the opportunity.
