Team Liquid Parent Company aXiomatic Raises $25M in Series B Funding

May 23, 2018

The Esports Observer Berlin, 23 May, 2018 Team Liquid Parent Company aXiomatic Raises $25M in Series B Funding Image Credit: Team Liquid aXiomatic, which owns a controlling stake in Team Liquid, has raised $25M in series B investment. Bruce Karsh, executive board member of the Golden State Warriors and president of Oaktree Capital Management, led the round. Other backers include Ted Leonsis, Peter Guber, Jeff Vinik, and firm Vernon & Park Capital. Existing aXiomatic investors include Magic Johnson and the Walt Disney Company. , “a broad-based esports and gaming company,” has raised $25M in a series B funding round. This is according to a document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on April 11, as first reported by ESPN’s Jacob Wolf . Leading the round was Bruce Karsh, an executive board member for the Golden State Warriors. He is also the co-founder and president of Oaktree Capital Management, an institutional money management firm which manages $100B in assets, as of Dec. 31, 2017. Team Liquid recently signed a partnership deal with SAP, and opened a training facility in Los Angeles. Karsh announced he would be joining aXiomatic as an investor and fourth co-chairman and back in March of this year, joining Golden State Warriors co-owner Peter Guber, as well as Ted Leonsis (majority owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment), and Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik—all of whom participated in the funding round, alongside Chicago-based firm Vernon & Park Capital. The company previously raised $16.M in series A funding back in June 2017, with investment from Vinik as well as the Walt Disney Company , and former Minnesota Wild CEO Jac Sperling. AXiomatic has a controlling stake in Team Liquid  , an esports organization which won the Dota 2   International in 2017, and the most recent NA LCS   Spring finals. As one of Riot Game’s ten new permanent partners, Team Liquid are required to pay a $10M franchise fee over the next few years. Team Liquid also recently signed a partnership deal with enterprise data company SAP , and launched its own training facility in Los Angeles—which cost around $1.5M to build, and for which the naming rights were sold to Dell’s Alienware brand for $4.5M . As well as Team Liquid, aXiomatic has twice invested in amateur esports platform Super League Gaming, most recently as part of a $15M funding round . AXiomatic also has stakes in coaching service Gamer Sensei, and is a limited partner of BITKRAFT esports ventures. When Riot Games announced its permanent partners for the 2018 NA LCS, it addressed the issue of multi-team ownership. The Golden State Warriors run their own franchise in the competition, Golden Guardians   , and on top of Guber’s ties to the NBA team, Cloud9   investor Chamath Palihapitiya is also an executive board member. Karsh’s entry as chair of aXiomatic complicates the issue further, which still seems to have no resolution since Riot gave the parties 12 months to fix the conflicts, back in November 2017. Full disclosure: BITKRAFT Esports Ventures is an investor in Esports Business Solutions UG, the company behind The Esports Observer brand and its verticals.
