SouthState cut to Hold at Truist on valuation, lack of catalysts

Sep 27, 2023

cemagraphics/E+ via Getty Images Truist analyst Brandon King downgraded shares of regional bank SouthState Corp. (NASDAQ: SSB ) to Hold from Buy on the basis of its premium valuation along with a lack of positive earnings catalysts. While the company has an "attractive footprint, core deposit base, and pristine credit quality history," King thinks the "stock is close to fully valued," he wrote in a note. He noted the stock is changing hands at 10.3 times 2024 EPS, exceeding the peer median at 8.3x. SA gives the stock a Valuation Grade of "C-," with the poorest mark in price-to-sales. "We anticipate limited earnings upside as deposit pricing pressure is relatively higher at SSB going forward compared to peers," the note said. The Hold rating agrees with the SA Quant system rating and diverges from the average sell-side analyst rating of Buy. SBB dipped 0.8% in Wednesday morning trading.
