Feb 4, 2016
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 4, 2016 /satPRnews.com/ -- On December 5th, 2015, students, educators and leaders gathered at the first inaugural TEDxYouth@Shadyside a broad, multi-school effort to bring the TEDx platform to the youth of Pittsburgh. Supported by TiE Pittsburgh, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and more, TEDxYouth@Shadyside was a successful collaborative effort. The day began at 9:30 AM at the August Wilson Center , where Raja, the emcee and KDKA talk-show host, kicked off the morning's medicine and entrepreneurship discussions. Dr. Alan Russell, TED 2006 speaker, spoke on the coming revolutions in healthcare, while Dr. Suresh Srinivasan examined big data. Speakers at TEDxYouth@Shadyside included:
The day was broken up into sections, and attendees and speakers had the chance to intermingle during the breaks. Notably, students from North Allegheny, Pine Richland, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon , Taylor Allderdice, Shady Side Academy, Sewickley Academy and more were in attendance, accomplishing the true aim of the event. "What we managed to accomplish this Saturday is hopefully only the beginning of a broader peer-to-peer effort in our area. If we can mobilize our cultural and entrepreneurial resources in Pittsburgh, I am positive we can make Pittsburgh the city of the future. Our city's push toward sustainable urban design and food sources for low-income residents is one of the many reasons I am happy to be a Pittsburgher," said Shaan Fye, the organizer. "The seniors leading this event have been amazing at balancing college applications with coordinating this city-wide effort. They have planted TEDxYouth@Shadyside's roots, and we are looking forward to build on the project next year. Kirsten Forrest, Anna Wan, and I want to continue this vision," says Sophia Scherlis, a junior at Shady Side Academy. In the days leading up to the event, Shaan appeared on NPR and KDKA . The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review also published an article about the event: http://triblive.com/news/neighborhoods/northhills/9799147-74/fye-technology-event . Shaan is also planning on helping organize the MESS PGH 2016 conference in the spring. According to Ishan Muzumdar, the producer of this event, this was the most rewarding leadership position he has ever had. "What we did humbles me, because I know that the reach of this one event will continue to spread, in the form of videos, new TEDx events, and more. "
