Own part of this Northumberland castle and it won't cost you a King's ransom

May 15, 2022

Own part of this Northumberland castle and it won't cost you a King's ransom Grade I listed Callaly Castle in Northumberland originates mostly from the 17th and 18th century, with the addition of a 14th century pele tower Share Here's a historic property that offers someone a chance to live like royalty at a knockdown price. Callaly Castle is a Grade I listed country house around 10 miles west of Alnwick in Northumberland which was once the home of the aristocratic Clavering and Browne families. The castle originates mostly from the 17th and 18th century, with the addition of a 14th century pele tower - a fortified house built to guard and warn against attack from the Scots. In 1987 architect Kit Martin re-designed the accommodation, dividing the castle in to seven principal “wings” and it is The Library House part of it which is now on the market for £625,000. It contains a large reception hall and retains one of the principal staircases of the castle and gives private entry to the castle's museum. The entrance to the house gives direct access to the main bedroom accommodation on the ground floor. Of particular note is the drawing room on the ground floor with a Vermont Vigilant log burner which was originally the castle's library - hence The Library House. The present owners added the mezzanine floor, adding a new dimension to the house with a dining room, which connects to the study, and another staircase descending to the kitchen/breakfast room, which is also on the first floor; on the second floor is the guest bedroom with its ensuite bathroom. Immediately to the front of the house is an extensive area of lawn, which incorporates the croquet lawn, giving way to the Deer Park beyond. The 27 acres of beautifully maintained gardens, grounds and woodland of the castle are accessible to all residents. They include more lawns, mature trees and shrubs, well-stocked borders and wonderful walks through the woods and around the lakes where wildlife abounds. The estate is also surrounded by the hills, moorland and valleys of north Northumberland including Thrunton Woods, Simonside, Coquetdale, Rothbury Forest and the Cheviot, a landscape has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
