Two decades ago, when Careteam Technologies CEO Alexandra Greenhill, MD started as an ER doc, most patients and families felt lost in transition between the silos of our healthcare system. Today, they still are. Along with co-founders Rob Attwell and Jeremy Smith, they are on a mission to eliminate avoidable readmissions and ER visits by empowering patients and families, alongside to healthcare providers, to improve care coordination using Careteam as the connector between all the touch-points. Patients can’t afford healthcare. Ken Lee and Paul Wedlake, founders of Healthbanc , are on a mission to provide 1 billion people with access to affordable healthcare and save a minimum of 20 million lives annually. Cost to Zero Moonshot: Radically reducing the cost of care by a factor of a million Today, plastic surgeons rely solely on memory and contrived visualizations based on 2D photography as their planning mechanism for soft tissue surgeries. For the 7,000 plastic surgeons throughout the US who lack tech-enabled tools for preoperative planning, Jordan Mills, founder of MirrorMe3D , is on mission to improve medical imaging for external soft tissue with 3D medical imaging and AR technology. Though a significant amount of hospital and physician reimbursement is tied to clinical outcomes and patient experience, many don’t understand how patients feel about their journey. Cass Speer, PhD and Patricia Kloehn, founders of Healthwide Solutions , are on a mission to advance the emotional connection between patients and providers through a single platform which will improve outcomes, reimbursement and Star ratings. Providers only spend 30% of clinic time with patients. By having a Texas Medical Center-trained clinician leading Valhalla Healthcare , founders Alex Baqui, MD and John Chen have seen first-hand how an archaic system and improper implementation of technology harms patients and providers alike. That is why they are on a mission to use AI and machine learning technology to deliver the affordable, accessible, and effective healthcare everyone deserves. Cure Disease Moonshot: Curing disease using data, technologies and personalized medicine 30 million people in the US are affected with diabetes, and an additional 84 million people are affected with prediabetes. Obesity-related diseases consume $250 billion a year in U.S. healthcare expenses. John Dykstra and Greg Guettler are on a mission to put an end to the obesity epidemic. Their company, Metalogics , has developed Lume, an ecosystem of devices that accurately measure individual metabolism, providing health professionals with the information they need to achieve healthy weight outcomes. Brain Health Moonshot: Unlocking the mysteries of the brain to improve health, wellness and mental health 9 out of 10 ‘screenagers’ experience a challenge to their brain health. Kyle Chang, Noe Foster, and Rich Abelmann, founders of HealthTechApps , are disrupting that trend with meprint, a personalized machine learning platform that ingests and synthesizes video and biomarker data to help doctors personalize treatment plans that boost brain health after a concussion. 800,000 Americans suffer from a stroke every year — most will not fully recover. Robert Freedman, MD and Robert Schock, founders of Life Recovery Systems , are on a mission to halt physiological damage that occurs after heart attacks, cardiac arrests and strokes via a rapid cooling system that may prevent brain damage. Happiness & Mental Health Moonshot: Connecting mind, body and spirit in the pursuit of happiness Traditional behavior change methods suffer from a nearly 100% failure rate because they lack the cause of sustainable behavioral health — real connection. Richard Lee and Theresa Lee, founders of Bravely , are on a mission to enable everyone to enjoy real connection — the power source for happiness, health, workplace to educational success and also cures social isolation, the leading cause of disease. Just do 5-min Powercalls with peer confidants, any time, anywhere. One in 5 Americans has a mental illness, and America is spending $444B on care costs, lost productivity, and support services. With only one third of this spending going towards care cost, many people with untreated mental illness do not receive the care they need. JC Adams and Elizabeth Truong, MD, founders of Cloud9 , are on a mission to provide comprehensive access to mental health treatment for everyone, especially in crisis situations. Millions of people struggle with addiction. Only 10% get treatment, 60% relapse. Coupled with social stigma, overcoming addiction is hard. David Sarabia, founder of inRecovery , is working to help addicts not only beat addiction and achieve sobriety, but go beyond it — to fully reintegrate as thriving members of society. Longevity Moonshot: Adding 50 healthy years to every human life Healthcare organizations and payers are handcuffed as they only have access to a fraction of all patient information necessary to manage their members — data within EMRs. Michael Schaedel and Rick Pionkowski, founders of Julota , enable gathering and integration of data from all community resources and organizations to address the issues around population health and the social determinants of health — to help healthcare organizations and communities improve and prevent life-changing events. We’re in the midst of a male reproductive health crisis with fertility rates at an all-time low and sperm counts plummeting more than 50% since the 1970’s. Karen Drexler and Greg Sommer, Health Transformers at Sandstone Diagnostics , are on a mission to help men become dads with Trak, an at-home fertility testing kit and actionable coaching . If you are an entrepreneur working to transform health, apply to the StartUp Health Moonshot Academy and join our next Masterclass Series on February 27th! Visit StartUpHealth.com/Portfolio to view the entire Army of Health Transformers working to improve the health & wellbeing of everyone in the world.
