Polaris Slingshot Joins Forces With Black Girls Ride To Diversify The Motorsports Industry

Jun 21, 2022

I am a Forbes contributor for For(bes) The Culture. New!Follow this author to improve your content experience. Got it! Ryne Swanberg/Octopi Media In the last decade, female motorcycle ownership has increased in the United States, with roughly one in every five motorcycle riders being female. According to a 2018 survey of American consumers, African-American women motorbike owners outnumber men by 53%. Polaris Slingshot is an enthusiastic advocate of female drivers on the road. The three wheel autocycle has been well received by women around the country due to its open-air cockpit and side-by-side sport bucket seats. The brand is establishing the trend of catering to a market that is 257% more multicultural and 60 % more female than the majority of other automobile manufacturers. Slingshot reported a 43% rise in female customers between 2019 and 2020. The new autodrive transmission, Slingshot's first automatic-like choice, contributed to the boost. The appeal here is that, because there is no clutch pedal or manual shift, drivers may handle a Slingshot just like any other automated vehicle. While Slingshot has consumers from many backgrounds, Tiger Bracy, Lead Industrial Designer of the Slingshot, believes the autocycle resonates with minorities because they have lacked a voice in larger society and have had to embrace being different. "Owning a Slingshot, or even riding in one, can make you feel unique, and it definitely shows an individual lifestyle that isn't concerned with the urge to blend in," Bracy comments. Slingshot has a genuine dedication to the culture, according to Sherman Wright, COO and managing partner of Ten35 advertising agency. MORE FOR YOU "From leadership to everyone within it, this is a vehicle that is based not only on the product that is being put out there, but the people behind the scenes. Many of those people are of the culture, making sure that they are really understanding the customer in mind and what is important to that customer. Slingshot is intentional in the way that they show up for their consumers,” adds Wright. Founder of Black Girls Ride Magazine Porsche Taylor in front of Polaris Slingshot Black Girls Ride When it comes to Slingshot and its intentionality, Porsche Taylor, founder of Black Girls Ride (BGR) and brand ambassador for Slingshot, says the company is a fantastic partner because it is inclusive to all riders, which makes the company stand out in the motorsports industry. BGR has had a significant impact on the motorsports industry. Women were underrepresented in the space, media, and advertising at the time the organization was founded in 2011. Taylor claims that, as a result of the BGR's influence on the industry, most OEM manufacturers now have a black female ambassador to promote women. Born out of a desire to provide diversity to a space where women are frequently marginalized; when it comes to ensuring that BGR is linked with other brands that share their vision, Taylor says that Slingshot is a natural fit. "I'm proud of the impact we've made on the industry by promoting women and demonstrating our ability to ride It's crucial to simply be a part of the motorsports conversation. Slingshot adds value to our community because we normally have women who are unable to ride a two-wheel vehicle due to physical limitations. The Slingshot is a terrific option and a lot of fun to ride if they're just looking for some fun in a vehicle that has a little bit more stability,” Taylor expresses. For(bes) The Culture was invited by Black Girls Ride and Slingshot to take a bespoke ride designed to connect culture influencers together and get them out on the road behind the wheel of a Slingshot. Guests were able to experience the Slingshot lineup in action, ask questions during product walkarounds, and meet Slingshot team members and ambassadors. Slingshot, according to Wright, adds value to the lives of people of color through culture and a shared value proposition. The brand understands the importance of having a vehicle that not only connects to performance but also to sociability and lifestyle. "This is a vehicle that is all about enhancing one's own personal style. We know that people of culture like brands that are invested in their community, market to that audience, and become a part of the culture. We want Slingshot to be an authentic and respected part of the culture. Not necessarily patronizing this audience only for the sake of selling the vehicle,” explains Wright. In terms of resources Taylor confirms that slingshot is great at providing educational tools for the BGR readers. "For example, we hold rider prep courses to teach women how to ride long distances outside of their comfort zone. Every year in November, we host our bikers conference. It’s an educational space for these women to learn about motor sports, both on the business side and the rider-do-it-yourself, mechanic side. That's just one of the numerous ways Polaris assists us in providing resources to our community," Taylor exclaimed. Full range of Polaris Slingshot autocycles Ryne Swanberg/Octopi Media According to Bracy, the objective was always to enjoy driving and cherish the open air experience because there aren't many vehicles you can drive with a steering wheel that allows you to feel like the Slingshot does. "Slingshot is an adventure in and of itself. It's a little different from anything else I've ever experienced. It isn't a sports car by any stretch of the imagination and it isn't just a bike. It's an open-air vehicle with a steering wheel and a five-speed stick shift, but it provides a new type of freedom. As a result, it gives you the impression that you're driving a race car. You become a participant in the adventure. Just being on the open road gives you a great thrill,” states Bracy. The excitement of the ride, according to Wright, is the best aspect of the auto cycle experience. "It’s the open atmosphere, the sensation of the noise of the engine being so near to you," Wright continues. “Even the outdoors nature of it gives you a jolt of excitement. From a cruising perspective, the overall experience is a sort of getaway and escape that is very accessible and attainable.” From a creator's standpoint, Bracy believes the autocycle appeals to people because of its design. "It appears to be a one-of-a-kind item, therefore it piques your interest. Second, it doesn't look like anything else on the road, so it's easy to recognize whenever you see one. Once you've driven it, you'll find yourself smiling as people around you come up to you and ask questions because they want to take it for a spin as well,” states Bracy. Wright's agency, which prides itself on assisting brands in finding their place and voice in culture, wants the culture to know that Slingshot is trying to amplify and add value to the culture through the power sports sector.
