Tencent wants to be foreign automakers’ go-to company for tech in China’s electric car market

Jun 27, 2022

- Advertisement - Tencent on Friday launched an all-in-one cloud product for domestic and foreign automakers in China, with features ranging from storing data in optimized ways to train autonomous driving systems to driving drivers to Tencent’s social media and map apps. features to provide access to. BMW and some US automakers are already working with the company, Liu Shuquan, vice president of Tencent Intelligent Mobility, told CNBC on Friday. He declined to specify which US carmakers it is working with. Liu said his company partners with about 40 auto brands including BMW, SAIC and NIO and covers 120 vehicle models. - Advertisement - BEIJING — Chinese Internet giant Tencent is looking to sell technology that the company says will help foreign automakers who want to sell cars in China’s vast electric vehicle market. - Advertisement - BMW and some US automakers are already working with Tencent, said Liu Xuquan, vice president of Tencent Intelligent Mobility, which is part of Tencent’s cloud business. Speaking to CNBC on Friday, he declined to specify which US carmakers it is working with. In a move aimed at helping fuel its international strategy, Liu’s team on Friday launched a new cloud computing product for automakers called “Tencent Intelligent Automobile Cloud.” - Advertisement - The company claimed that the all-in-one cloud product – also available for home automakers – can cover all technical aspects of an electric car. Those features range from storing data in an optimized way to training autonomous driving systems, giving drivers access to Tencent’s social media and map apps. The user interface could be a selling point for drivers in China, given how Tencent dominates an array of top online entertainment apps in China. The company has played Facebook’s role in China with its ubiquitous WeChat messaging, payments and social media app — something tech rivals Baidu and Alibaba haven’t come close to yet. In the entertainment space, Tencent also has other apps: QQ Music, one of the two main Spotify-like apps in China; Tencent Video, which provides on-demand streaming content, including reality shows and animated series; As well as popular mobile games like Honor of Kings. Tencent Maps is the third most popular navigation app in Apple’s App Store in China — the top two being its major rivals Alibaba and Baidu. Liu said all cars that allow passengers or drivers to access Tencent apps from the vehicle’s platform need to enter into an agreement with Tencent. The app-level partnership began in 2018, the same time Tencent Cloud began working with automakers for autonomous driving services, the company said. Adding more self-driving technology Players in China’s auto industry are increasingly betting that local drivers want more autonomous driving features, which are essentially assisted-driving functions due to the regulation of current technology. According to Tencent, already in the first quarter, 23% of new cars sold in China had a limited level of assisted driving, referred to as “Level 2” in the classification system for autonomous driving. With the new cloud computing product announced last week, Liu said foreign car companies could develop vehicles with navigation and assisted-driving features optimized for China’s roads and terrain. “Data is owned by [the] OEM, consumer,” Liu said, referring to original equipment manufacturers who provide components and parts for another company’s product. “We only provide a cloud service to store that data. The other thing is that we provide an entire ecosystem. That ecosystem includes not only[s] Our own service and content but also our partners.” Liu said his company is already partnering with about 40 auto brands including BMW, SAIC and NIO, covering 120 vehicle models. He also mentioned partnership talks with German and Japanese companies. BMW did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. Representatives from SAIC and Nio spoke at Friday’s launch event for the “Tencent Intelligent Automobile Cloud” product. Government subsidies have helped fuel growth in the industry, and the government is also making it easier for drivers to obtain license plates for electric-powered cars than for gasoline. In addition to Tesla, domestic brands such as BYD dominate the new energy vehicle category, which includes hybrid and battery-powered cars. In May, the China Passenger Car Association noted “early success” for Volkswagen’s push toward electrification. China is the largest single market for the German auto giant. By 2030, Volkswagen aims to make half of its sales from battery-electric vehicles. Credit: www.cnbc.com /
