Rice Warner’s female staff lose super perk

May 3, 2021

Share It’s not often that an acquisition results in a portion of a company’s workforce taking an immediate pay cut. But that’s the lot of the women at Rice Warner, who for the past seven years have been receiving what must (thanks to the power of compound interest) be one of corporate Australia’s most lucrative employee benefits. They’ve been putting away an extra 1.5 per cent in super, paid by the actuarial firm only to its female staff. Michael Rice’s Rice Warner in 2012 embarked on one of corporate Australia’s most interesting policy experiments. Louise Kennerley But with the boutique’s acquisition by big four consultancy Deloitte, that is no more. Deloitte’s national talent leader Tina McCreery told us Deloitte was committed to creating a workplace “where everyone, regardless of gender, is paid equitably and is supported to develop and succeed”. What this means for Rice Warner’s female staff is a migration to Deloitte’s standard employment conditions, “where superannuation is per statutory entitlements”. The merger, which took place at the start of this month, thus marks an end to one of Australia's most interesting employer-led policy experiments. In 2012, the Michael Rice-founded firm calculated that as women lived longer, they needed higher superannuation balances upon retirement to maintain the same standard of living as their male colleagues (even though they tend, for a number of reasons, to retire with less). So it decided to pay them an extra 1.5 per cent of their salary in superannuation contributions, paid for by the company as an employee benefit. The policy is, clearly, discriminatory. So then-Rice Warner deputy CEO Melissa Fuller had to apply for an exemption to the Sexual Discrimination Act, which she secured. A later attempt by Greens politician Adam Bandt to formally amend the Act to allow other employers to do the same without a formal exemption got nowhere. The extra superannuation paid to women was listed as one of Rice Warner’s key achievements in its last newsletter. But the novel solution hasn’t been widely adopted elsewhere. And now, it has died a quiet death. Like many a failed revolution, we suppose it was ahead of its time. The country's most expert opinion and analysis. Sign up to our weekly newsletter.
