Your letters for March 4

Mar 4, 2020

Updated: March 4, 2020 Didsbury volunteer firefighters Lee Penner (hose) and Pierre Martel clean up a fire truck. Patrick Price / The Calgary Herald Fire training budget cuts deemed ‘dangerous’ Re: Rural fire chief says training cuts aren’t acceptable; Thursday’s budget scrapped $500,000 firefighting grant, March 2 I have been a volunteer firefighter since 2004 and I also work as an instructor, delivering training to rural firefighters. The latest cut from the Alberta budget directly impacts training and this is extremely worrisome and dangerous. The majority of firefighters in Alberta are volunteers and many of them receive no compensation for any work or training. So the next time a train derails or a truck overturns and spills dangerous goods, the next time someone needs to be cut out of their mangled vehicle or rescued from a burning building, remember that the people tasked with helping may not have been certified or re-certified to provide these services since Jason Kenney decided saving $500,000 is more important. How can we justify cutting training dollars for people already working for nothing? Will these volunteers be asked to purchase their own equipment and respond in their own vehicles next? Bob Jonson, Camrose Oversimplification is not helpful Misinformation and bad advice is a serious problem for the Canadian oil and gas industry. Statements such as “the days for oil are numbered” is an oversimplification of a very complex issue. Even Chinese philosopher Confucius recognized that oversimplification can lead to misunderstanding and distortion of the truth. Most business ventures have two basic ingredients, namely demand and supply. If there is no demand, there would be no need for an oil and gas industry. Then why is the oil industry (supplier) under attack instead of the demand side, namely the people causing the demand. Are people prepared to make the necessary changes to their comfortable lifestyle? Let’s put the blame where it belongs. Ernie Trosch, Calgary Electricity bill shocking I was shocked to see my Enmax electrical usage for my bill month ending Jan. 19. It said I used a whopping 1,266 KW-H (kilowatt-hours) of electricity and we were away for a week at Christmas. My previous statement ending Dec. 15 said we used only 170 KW-H. What about last year? My usage was about the same but close to evenly split on the two months. Does it matter? The price of electricity for the Dec. 15 bill is 6.7 cents/KW-H and the Jan. 19 bill is 14.4 cents/KW-H, more than double the price and seven times the usage of the previous month! Carbon taxes and now this? What’s going on Enmax? Dan Petryk, Calgary Fear for the future I recently was a patient at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Foothills Medical Centre and my experience was nothing short of phenomenal. I observed hardworking medical staff run off their feet. They have patients lives in their hands, yet were always kind, compassionate and efficient. I fear what will happen to our health-care system if proposed UCP cuts go through. We all cannot afford to go outside of the province for treatment. I would hate to be a patient in four or five years after hundreds of millions of dollars and jobs are cut. Jessica White, Calgary
