Asian Tech Companies’ Climate Goals Fall Short in New Greenpeace Report

Dec 2, 2021

- Advertisement - Asian tech companies are making some progress in the fight against climate change, but falling short of what is needed to meet many global environmental goals, according to a new report by Greenpeace East Asia. “Last year, China, Japan and South Korea issued historic climate pledges, but the biggest tech companies in our region haven’t caught on,” Greenpeace East Asia climate and energy campaigner Zhuying Wu said on Thursday. - Advertisement - The report examined climate commitments made by 30 major tech companies in three countries and assessed whether they are doing enough to cut fossil fuels, how transparent they are in reporting progress and whether they are committed to clean energy. are advocating. The rankings come as investors take a sharp interest in companies’ climate action, especially on the heels of corporate sustainability commitments made at the UN’s COP26 climate meeting in Glasgow last month. The Greenpeace report, the environmental advocacy group’s first such regional ranking, found ample room for improvement, with most climate targets too narrow and too far into the future. Only two of the 30 companies, Yahoo (Japan) and Rakuten Group Inc., have committed to phase out non-renewables by 2030 or before. With most of the targets set decades later, “it is too late to accelerate East Asia’s energy transition,” Greenpeace said. The group said that none of the companies that have aimed to stop using energy derived from fossil fuels in their operations have covered their entire supply chains. This fails to capture a complete picture of a company’s emissions, as supply chains typically generate more emissions than business operations. For example, Samsung Electronics Co. uses only renewable energy in the US, Europe and China, but continues to rely on fossil fuels in South Korea and Vietnam, which account for more than 80% of its electricity use, said Ms Wu, who co-authored the report. She pointed to Apple Inc. as an example of a company addressing supply-chain emissions, which is clearly committed to supporting more than 100 of its suppliers to transition to renewable energy. The report cited other prominent US tech names such as Alphabet Inc’s Google as offering lessons in renewable energy use. Apple met its 100% renewable energy target in 2018, and Google did so in 2017. All ranked companies need to deliver on their renewable energy promises, the report said. Even top-ranked Sony Group Inc. has made “little progress toward increasing its renewable energy use,” with renewables accounting for 7% of the company’s total electricity consumption, according to its 2021 sustainability report. . No company scored higher than Sony’s C+ grade on the AF scale used in the rankings. Greenpeace said Sony was one of four companies that disclosed emissions data from outside the country, along with Canon Inc., Renesas Electronics Corp and LG Electronics Inc. It was one of only three companies, along with Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd., to include supply chain emissions in their targets. Japanese companies were well represented in the rankings, with Fujitsu Limited and Panasonic Corp in second and third place respectively, and Rakuten in fifth place. Hitachi and Toshiba also made the top 10. LG was the top-scoring South Korean company in fourth place, while China’s Baidu Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co. were ranked 6th and 7th respectively. The data used in the Greenpeace report was taken from public sources including the company’s ESG report as of September. Write to Fabiana Negrino Ochoa at [email protected] ,
