Brayfoil Technologies, a South African clean-tech firm, has been selected to participate in the Katapult Ocean accelerator and has received an unknown amount of money from the Norway-based ocean impact investor. Brayfoil Technologies, which was founded in 2017, employs biomimicry-inspired compliant structures that change form like bird wings to enable bigger wind turbines and reduced energy costs. The firm has garnered worldwide exposure after being picked for Katapult Ocean, which has 108 portfolio companies in 35 countries and US $50 million in funds under management. It previously participated in the South African-based OceanHub Africa accelerator. Katapult Group has invested NOK50 million (US $6 million) in this cohort, which was chosen from a pool of over 2,700 candidates with a 0.8% acceptance rate. “We’re immensely proud to be a part of the Katapult family, they are one of the top 50 climate investors in the world and we look forward to scaling an African-born technology with their support,” said Matthew Bray, co-founder, and chief executive officer (CEO) of Brayfoil. Global patents, over US $2 million in grant money and private investment, and a team of competent engineers are propelling Brayfoil’s technology forward. The Climate Innovation Centre at the Innovation Hub nurtured the team, and it is one of Hello Tomorrow’s Top 100 Deep Tech firms.
