Crescent Capital seeks buyer for clinical trials biz Nucleus Networks

Jun 30, 2021

Share Australian private equity firm Crescent Capital has put its clinical research business Nucleus Network on the block, with expectations of a $600 million-plus payday. Street Talk can reveal Crescent Capital has hired investment bank Morgan Stanley to shop the business to potential trade and private equity buyers, and preliminary talks with interested parties have already begun. Nucleus Network runs clinical trials in Melbourne, Brisbane and the US. Bloomberg Nucleus Network is understood to have been pitched as a $40 million a year business, in terms of forecast EBITDA, with most of its revenue from customers in the United States and Asia. The business runs clinical trials in Australia and the United States. It was founded with funding from the Victorian government and was sold to Crescent Capital in 2018. It specialises in running Phase 1 clinical trials and has expanded from its Melbourne base to pick up businesses in Brisbane (Q-Pharm) and USA (Prism) in the past few years. Its current trials include heart, liver, antibody and memory studies, and it has been involved in testing vaccines developed to combat COVID-19. Advertisement The looming auction comes amid red-hot investor interest in clinical research businesses, which has encouraged a bunch of local names to test buyer appetite including TPG Capital’s Novotech and Victoria’s 360Biolabs . Nucleus Network is expected to be worth 15 to 20 times EBITDA, or more. For Australia’s Crescent, the potential sale comes three years after acquired the business. Its plan was to turn the group from a single-site and niche offering into a global player. It also comes less than two months after Crescent listed one of its other healthcare sector portfolio companies, pathology business Australian Clinical Labs, and six months after it agreed to sell medical centres business Myhealth to Medibank Private.
