Nationwide’s Gale King Shares Lessons From Her Rise To The C-Suite In A Traditionally Male-Dominated World

May 17, 2021

Gale King While some may think the success of a company depends on its customers, Gale King, the chief administrative officer of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, attributes much of her business’ growth to another group of stakeholders: its associates. During her eight-year tenure in the C-suite at Nationwide, King made inclusion, and documenting its contribution to the bottom line, a key part of the company’s human resources strategy, and it paid off. “What we have seen over the last eight years is that as our engagement increased, our inclusion index increased and our performance increased,” King says. “We’ve clearly been able to see that there was a direct correlation in having a culture that values all people and having everyone giving their best work to being included to the bottom line.”  In her forthcoming book, Get in the Way: Personal Insights for a Rewarding Career and Driving Meaningful Change, she chronicles her experience as a Black woman coming up through a conservative Fortune 100 company, from entry-level adjuster to C-level executive, and how her unique perspective on inclusive practices ultimately helped drive corporate growth. “If, in fact, the growth and success of the company is important, then we know the only way to do that is with talent,” writes King in her book, which hits stores in mid-June. “And so, we know that if you have a strong diversity and inclusion brand, it helps you attract talent. And if, in fact, the environment is inclusive, it helps you retain that talent.” King’s rise to the top began in late 2008, when Nationwide CEO Steve Rasmussen approached her about developing a strategy to improve associate engagement after the company ranked in the third decile of Gallup’s North American Finance and Insurance workgroup database. Having previously led high-stakes projects with corporate partners, King was the one for the job. “You can’t fix what you don’t know,” she says. “You have to do a really good job of having data so that you can understand what your associates or your employees are telling you.” Drawing from her experience, she put in place practices and policies to increase associates’ visibility and ensure the most comfortable working environment possible. She also implemented strategies to train leaders in and promote conversation about diversity and inclusion. By 2014, Gallup had ranked Nationwide in the sixth decile of the North American Finance Insurance workgroup database and operating revenues had increased, according to a Harvard Business School case study. The company’s diversity and inclusion metrics improved as well, with the number of women holding senior positions growing from 28% in 2008 to 32% 2014. In 2018, Nationwide received an award from global nonprofit Catalyst for accelerating and advancing women in the workplace. Additionally, the company  began forming partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and with Hispanic and Asian organizations, further improving diversity and inclusion efforts. As her 37-year career at Nationwide comes to an end—she’s set to retire in July—King has realized the importance of sharing her story, to illustrate how diversity can change an organization, especially when its people are involved, and to inspire. “I didn’t always share [my story]. But I realized how important it is that we never know when there’s someone who might be inspired and that you might in some way help change their trajectory,” King says.
