President focusing on his duties: KSP on impeachment discourse

Jan 15, 2024

President focusing on his duties: KSP on impeachment discourse January 15, 2024 21:28 GMT+700 Chief of the Presidential Staff (KSP), Moeldoko, in Jakarta on Monday (January 15, 2024). (ANTARA/Yashinta Difa) Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the Presidential Staff (KSP), Moeldoko, emphasized that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is focusing on completing his duties for the remaining nine months of his term instead of the discourse on his impeachment. "The President is still very concerned about completing his duties, which (the end of his term) are only a few months away. We all are speeding up to complete various government programs," he said at the KSP Office here on Monday. Moeldoko called on the people to focus on the elections in February, instead of triggering a non-productive agenda, such as talking about the President's impeachment. According to him, the government is very concerned about ensuring that the elections are implemented well. "Let's not create a (negative) situation because we are focusing on holding the elections. There should be no unproductive agendas for the community and the government," he said. Referring to the issue of impeachment, Moeldoko said that the Widodo administration has received very high appreciation from the Indonesian people. The discourse on impeachment arose after a number of figures who are members of Petisi 100 went to the office of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud Md, on January 9, 2024, to propose that President Widodo be impeached. Mahfud said that a presidential impeachment is a long and time-consuming process as it must involve the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Constitutional Court (MK). The proposal for impeaching Widodo led to discussions on its pros and cons from various parties and figures, including former MK chairperson Jimly Asshiddiqie. Asshiddiqie, through his account on X, described the impeachment issue as a distraction indulged in by supporters of the presidential and vice presidential candidates who were feeling panicked and were afraid of losing the election.
