Yorba Linda football tops Orange in back-and-forth game that includes 13 TDs

Subscribe now YORBA LINDA –Tyler Kovalcin rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown as Yorba Linda outscored Orange 50-43 in a wild nonleague football game Thursday at Yorba Linda High. Yorba Linda, No. 13 in the Orange County top 25, is 3-0. No. 17 Orange is 0-2. Mustangs junior quarterback Reyn Beal passed for 276 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 31-yard pass to J.J. Conrad in the fourth quarter for the last of the game’s 13 touchdowns. That score put Yorba Linda ahead 47-43. Hunter Kennedy concluded the scoring with a 30-yard field goal with 4:51 to go. Yorba Linda defensive end Ali Elfiky got a third-down sack and defensive end John Ward got a fourth-down sack to seal the win. Kovalcin, a junior, finished with 140 yards rushing on 13 carries. Beal completed 17 of 23 passes. He made seven consecutive completions in the second half. Yorba Linda’s Garrett Gonzalez had 98 yards receiving on four receptions. William Saucedo rushed for two touchdowns. Orange sophomore Kobe Boykin rushed for 212 yards and three touchdowns. One touchdown run covered 80 yards, another went for 58 yards. Panthers senior quarterback Zachary Siskowic completed 16 of 24 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jonathan Smith who had 120 yards receiving. Orange had the lead four times. Yorba Linda had the lead six times and the game was tied twice. “We played with a lot of heart and our kids never gave up,” said Yorba Linda coach Jeff Bailey. “Even when there was some adversity, they came back and when they needed to make a play and they made a play.” Kovalcin praised the Mustangs’ offensive line of Kaz Ashlay, Rory Mosier, Allen Abrogar, Ethan Thomas and Jon Silvestri. “Our offense did good, our line did good,” Kovalcin said. “They blocked fantastically.” Yorba Linda scored on its game-opening possession with an 11-yard run by Saucedo. Orange tied it 7-7 on its first possession. Siskowic connected with Smith on a 13-yard touchdown pass, a sidearm throw that Smith pulled in between defenders Kovalcin regained the lead for the Mustangs with his 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Orange came back to tie it 14-14 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Christopher Quiroga. Boykin’s 80-yard touchdown run gave the Panthers a 21-14 lead. Elfiky scored on a 2-yard run to make it 21-21, and with six seconds to go in the first half Kovalcin scored on a 1-yard run. The kick failed, leaving Yorba Linda with a 27-21 lead at halftime. Boykin’s 1-yard touchdown run gave Orange a 28-27 lead early in the third quarter. Saucedo’s second touchdown run, this one for 10 yards, put Yorba Linda on top 33-28. Boykin put his speed on display again on his 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that sent the lead back to Orange 36-33. Related Articles
