99-Year-Old Lifelong Republican Finds Himself at Clinton Event

Aug 10, 2016

John McCaw lists one after another. They are all Republicans he supported to be President of the United States. Donald Trump won't join his list. (President Calvin Coolidge. Photo courtesy: biography.com) "His stupid remarks and his ego," McCaw said Wednesday afternoon inside Des Moines Lincoln High School's Roundhouse Gym. "And he always has the last word. " The last word for McCaw in his choice for president this November will be "Clinton. " McCaw doesn't believe Hillary Clinton is the perfect candidate. In fact, he brought up the questions about whether she has been entirely truthful about her decision as U.S. Secretary of State to conduct official business on her private email system that operated out of her family's home. Numerous polls show the majority of Americans don't consider Clinton honest or trustworthy. McCaw acknowledges the issue but points out it's equally important to consider the alternative. "It's one thing to vote for a person who's accused of not telling the whole truth," he said. "It's another thing to vote for a person who's stupid. " (Hillary Clinton held a campaign rally at Lincoln Wednesday afternoon, where she praised the state's wind energy growth. ) But what will his friends think that, after all these years, he will now support a Democrat? "Most of my friends are six feet under," McCaw said matter of factly. "Rise up from their grave and shout, 'hallelujah! '" He said he would have preferred to vote for Ohio Governor John Kasich, but the Republican barely competed in Iowa and failed to win his party's nomination. Trump narrowly lost the Iowa Caucuses to Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
