Man making illegal fireworks in basement of Raytown duplex kills himself in explosion

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said investigators discovered the body of a man in the basement of the house that exploded Monday night in Raytown, Missouri. In addition to the man who died, ATF said three people, including two children, were injured in the blast in the 7400 block of Englewood Lane. Firefighters, police and medics responded around 7 p.m. Monday to the explosion and subsequent blaze at the Raytown home. . John Ham of the ATF said the initial investigation revealed someone was doing illegal fireworks in the basement of the duplex. Ham said medical authorities will need to confirm the identity of the victim, but it is believed to be the person who made the illegal fireworks. “It has gone from a sad event to a tragic event,” Ham said. “Fireworks are unstable by nature because when you turn them on, you want them to explode. Whether someone tries to make them on their own – either by mixing chemicals or buying fireworks from consumers and trying to remove the powder from them – this can unfortunately be the result. Witnesses reported seeing two conscious and alert boys leaving the scene on stretchers. A man was also injured and taken to hospital for treatment. The names of the victims were not immediately released. ‘ATF said Tuesday that once the structure is secure enough to allow entry, the body will be removed and turned over to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification. The Missouri Fire Marshal is participating in the investigation and she was still considered a crime scene.
