Prolific thief who targeted same store 21 times banned from Newcastle Central Station In a bid to curb his offending, Jason Smith was made subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order after repeatedly stealing from Sainsbury's in the station Group 28 Sign up for free to get the latest North East news and updates delivered straight to your inbox Invalid emailSomething went wrong, please try again later. Sign Up Group 28 A serial thief has been banned from a major city train station after targeting the same store 21 times. As previously reported on Chroniclelive, Jason Smith found himself on two suspended sentences in May this year after stealing from Sainsbury's, in Newcastle Central Station , on 11 occasions in three months . But, just six weeks later and despite knowing his freedom was hanging by a thread, the 39-year-old couldn't resist temptation and was spotted helping himself to £33-worth of dental products from the neighbouring Boots store. A court heard that, in total, Smith had stolen or attempted to steal from the same Sainsbury's store 21 times in a year and once from Boots. The suspended sentences were activated and Smith was locked-up last month. But the British Transport Police sought further action to try and prevent the career crook from repeatedly darkening their doors once he was released. Officers applied to Newcastle Magistrates' Court for Smith, of George's Road, in Elswick , to be made subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order, which would ban him from entering Newcastle Central Station or the surrounding area for three years. And the application was granted by District Judge Kate Meek on Wednesday. She said: "I'm going to impose a Criminal Behaviour Order that prohibits you from entering an area specified by a map, which you will get a copy of. That's the area inside Neville Street, Orchard Street, Forth Street and Marlborough Crescent. "You are not allowed in any parts of Central Station or the rail network there or the Nexus premises that falls within that area. You may, however, travel through that area on public transport but you must not get off. That order will last for three years." The court heard that, in total, Smith had stolen more than £1,000-worth of groceries from Sainsbury's, most of which was not recovered. He was given his first suspended sentence in July 2021, which he breached by targeting the store again between December 2021 and May this year. Following those offences, he was given a second suspended sentence in May as magistrates deemed he had a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation". However, he was soon up to his old tricks, this time in Boots, just six weeks later and was hauled back before the courts last month. The suspended sentences were activated and Smith was jailed. He is due for release in September. Gregg Stephens, defending Smith in the past, said he suffered from a number of issues but always pleaded guilty. Read Next
