Chelsea v Tottenham player ratings: Reece James mixes dark arts to keep Son Heung-min quiet

Aug 14, 2022

H Arry Kane stunned Chelsea with a header in the dying seconds of the game to earn his side a point at Stamford Bridge. Reece James thought he had won it with a 77th-minute lifted finish on Hugo Lloris after Kalidou Koulibaly opened the scoring with a volley from a Marc Cucurella corner in the first half. Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte and their assistants were cautioned after they clashed after Tottenham’s equalizer by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Red cards were then handed out to the coaches after a full-time brawl. It was another game to go down in game lore with Conor Gallagher, Raheem Sterling, Koulibaly and Cucurella all making their home debuts ahead of new ownership group Boehly-Clearlake. Here’s how Nizaar Kinsella rated Chelsea performers at Stamford Bridge… Read more Edouard Mendy – 7 Mendy was rarely tested in his 50th appearance for Chelsea in all competitions, but generally made big saves when called up. He saved a one-on-one effort by quickly rushing Ryan Sessegnon midway through the first half and did the same in the second half against Son Heung-min. Made a magnificent save in the 94th minute from a header by Eric Dier. Reece James – 9 Anyone who silences Son Heung-min deserves a very high rating. He was tasked with scoring the South Korea international who was joint top scorer in the Premier League last season. When he was finally beaten by Son, he knocked him down in a tactical foul to pick up a yellow card. Mixing the dark arts with his physicality ensured rare anonymous exposure for Son. Looked like he would prove the winner of the game by lifting a simple finish by Hugo Lloris after being moved at the back in a genius tactical change by Tuchel, but made the unfortunate deflection to bring the Spurs leveler home . Thiago Silva – 6 Rarely troubled by Spurs but kept possession slow in his central role. Made a good block when he needed it against Son. Kalidou Koulibaly – 9 A dream start at home with the goal on the volley and he even attempted another moments later with a kick over the head. His play in possession was also excellent and, with three shots, he looked determined to be among the goals on his home debut. Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 8 Loftus-Cheek’s direct run caused all sorts of problems and turned Tuchel’s complex system into an asymmetric one. He smartly chose when to drift in midfield or out based on Reece James’ movements. Attempt from a weak header on a cross from Jorginho. N’Golo Kante – 9 Chelsea F.C. via Getty Images Kante was again the big player at his best. A huge part of the display that silenced Harry Kane, blocking his passing lanes with his energy. A goal threat from long range with his shot and a creative outlet, it was a complete performance from a world-class player. Unfortunately, he proved shaky, leaving the pitch hurt once more with Gallagher coming in his place. Jorginho – 6 A non-Jorginho sliding tackle in the 11th minute slammed into Dejan Kulusevski to set the tone for his side’s performance. Stubborn, creative and integral to the tactical plan, the Italy international has been a key figure. His magnificent cross in the 45th minute could have earned him an assist if Loftus-Cheek had met him correctly. Marc Cucurella – 8 Cucurella produced a series of great tackles throughout, including one in the 49th minute to cut off a counterattack. He blocked shots and got an assist for Koulibaly’s goal. Mason mount – 6 He led the press well but opened up one of his rare chances in the 37th minute. Energetic without being too creative. He missed an opportunity to put the shine on the result in the 85th minute. Kai Havertz – 7 Action images via Reuters It could have been Havertz and not James who was hailed as the game winner, but he missed a keeper moments before the second goal. Still, he linked up very well with fellow strikers Mount and Sterling in one of his best performances of late. Rahim Sterling – 7 Nice backheel to help win the corner for the goal. He also provided the assist for the winning goal. Sterling integrated seamlessly and was Chelsea’s best-performing striker in their first two games. Replacements: Cesar Azpilicueta – 6 He came on as part of a genius tactical switch to allow Reece James to go wild on the wing Son was defending. On his 450th appearance for the club, he was adequate. Conor Gallagher – N/A
