It’s beer to the rescue. Helltown Brewing of Western Pennsylvania has created a new brew designed to bring attention to 412 Food Rescue of Pittsburgh’s cause of preventing fresh, leftover food from being thrown away by stores and restaurants. The new limited edition, low-ABV (alcohol by volume) IPA called “412 Food Rescue Brew” is available now. According to Helltown Brewing, the 6.0% ABV is brewed with oats and wheat with El Dorado, Galaxy, Centennial and Trident hops added for “bright lemon and grapefruit aromas with a flavorful tropical mango and orange finish.” Every $1 from a pint or sale of a 4-pack of the brew in Helltown Brewing taprooms, as well as a portion from distribution sales, will be donated to 412 Food Rescue. In addition local nonprofit “Helping Hops,” which mobilizes the craft beer community to support charitable causes, is providing promotional support. The organizations hope that the beer will bring attention to the issues of food waste, food insecurity and environmental sustainability. Mindful of the statistic that in the U.S. as much as 40% of food produced is wasted while 1 in 8 people go hungry, 412 Food Rescue began in Pittsburgh in March 2015. Its mission is to prevent perfectly good food from being thrown away. Today it’s the largest volunteer food rescue organization in the country with over 19,000 volunteers.
