Hawaii needs an appetite for risk, Energy Excelerator director says

Jan 30, 2016

Dawn Lippert, Co-founder and executive director, Energy Excelerator Tina Yuen PBN Hawaii is missing an “appetite for risk and acceptance of failure,” says Energy Excelerator executive director Dawn Lippert . “It’s a critical entrepreneurial value — to be able to take risks and fail,” she said in a recent interview with PBN. “That’s something we really need to pay attention to and foster in our youth as well as our young entrepreneurs and our executives. Ultimately increasing our appetite for risk will serve us well in the long term.” Dawn Lippert, Co-founder and executive director, Energy Excelerator Tina Yuen PBN The Pacific International Center for High Technology Research program provides up to $1 million in startup funding for innovative companies in the energy and sustainability sector. Energy Excelerator has distributed approximately $10 million to its startup companies, which have gone on to raise more than $200 million in follow-on funding. Those up in the startup industry say the two biggest challenges are finding capital and talent. That’s all the more reason to partner with innovators on the Mainland, says Lippert, noting that the nonprofit has partnered with companies including GE Ventures and BlackStone. The accelerator makes a point of “mixing with the best talent from across the nation,” Lippert said. Nine of the Energy Excelerator portfolio companies are headquartered in Hawaii, with 25 more active here with people and customers in the Islands. Hawaii is also one of the best states for energy startups, says Lippert. There still could be more buy-in from the business community, though. Hawaii businesses are beginning to catch on that there are creative ways to support the innovation sector. It could be anything from executive mentoring, to participating in energy efficiency technology pilot projects. “We’ve had a good relationship with the business community here,” she said. “The key is for the tech community to continue to provide value to businesses.” Read more about Hawaii’s startup accelerators in next week’s cover story.
